The team at iMac Linux (http://www.imaclinux.net) has managed to get the
iMac DV to boot linux to a usable point. We have put together a small
howto on how to achieve this Open Firmware boot and how to kludge a root
file system onto your iMac.
You can find the HowTo at:
http://www.imaclinux.net:8080/content/942890525/index_html
The iMac DV currently has ethernet (through the Dec Tulip device driver)
and USB support, and appears to function quite fast as well!

Los Angeles, Calif. November 17, 1999 - Founders of cutting-edge Linux
software development tools announced today the formation of a company to
further extend their products into this burgeoning market. The new
company, New Planet Software, is focused on providing software development
tools to both the professional and hobbyist software developer.
"We started this company so that we could spend more time with our passion,
writing solid code. Considerable time has been devoted to developing our
software, and New Planet Software will enable development to continue in
line with the Linux software philosophy," noted co-founder John Lindal.
New Planet Software is a software company focused on providing software
development tools that are:
* Intelligently designed for ease of use.
* Powerful and robust to multiply the developer's productivity.
* Open source to provide flexibility and security.
New Planet Software business plans involve roles as a support seller and
commercial licensor of the JX Application Framework(tm) Professional
License. This approach allows New Planet Software to keep JX Application
Framework, Code Crusader(tm) and Code Medic(tm) open source. "We hold a
strong belief that it is important to do right by all those who have
participated in our software development in the past and for those who
might contribute in the future," emphasized John Lindal. The JX
Application Framework license remains free for personal, non-commercial
use, and the Code Crusader and Code Medic licenses remain free for all use.
To compliment the founding of New Planet Software, a new web site has been
unveiled at www.newplanetsoftware.com. The site will allow customers to
learn about our products, participate in future development and order New
Planet Software products.

Los Angeles, Calif. November 17, 1999 - New Planet Software(tm) is proud to
announce the JX Development Suite(tm) for Linux, Version 1.0 Personal
Edition. JX Development Suite promises to be the first truly complete
applications framework and software development environment for the Linux
Operating System. Offering all the capabilities of JX Application
Framework(tm), Code Crusader(tm) and Code Medic(tm), JX Development Suite
provides software developers with the most advanced and well engineered
tools for high productivity.
JX Application Framework is a full-featured C++ application framework and
GUI class library for the X Window System. The power of JX stems from its
rich feature set and extensibility which support all aspects of
professional-quality software application development. An important
compliment to JX is the highly rated Code Crusader IDE. Code Crusader is a
full-featured text editor and C++ class browser that was recently given the
prestigious honor of being chosen a 1999 LinuxWorld finalist. The final
piece of the Suite is the seamlessly integrated graphical debugger, Code
Medic. Code Medic provides powerful debugging tools on top of standard
Linux gdb debugger.
The JX Development Suite package consists of CD, users manual and one year
of priority email support. Package features include:
* JX Application Framework, Code Crusader and Code Medic software with
all source code. All software on the CD is open source. *
* A user manual that is the definitive documentation source for JX
Application Framework, Code Crusader and Code Medic.
* Priority email support that ensures your questions and suggestions
receive the highest level of attention.
* Bonus software that includes Arrow for email reading, Glove providing
data analysis tools, the file manager System G, and the calculator with
an electronic paper interface, THX-1138.
Priced at $99 (plus shipping and handling), the Suite provides significant
value for its convenience and technical support features.
Additionally, for a limited time only JX Development Suite Lite is being
offered at $59 (plus shipping and handling). This is a savings of 40% off
the JX Development Suite price. The "Lite" designation denotes that the
package is offered with standard instead of priority email support. We are
providing this low price in recognition of the many, loyal developers who
have contributed to our software.
JX Development Suite and JX Development Suite Lite are immediately
available for purchase at the company web site www.newplanetsoftware.com.
We are also working hard to bring it to retail outlets worldwide.

Subject: Java based Kernel Prolog (Open Source Reference Implementation)
Date: Fri, 19 Nov 1999 01:29:35 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
We are glad to announce BinNet Corporation's latest Open Source
project, Kernel Prolog.
While providing a compact Java based reference implementation
which runs Horn Clause code as any conventional Prolog,
the Kernel Prolog project establishes an Open Source forum
for experimenting with a radical departure from Prolog's two
decades old built-ins (90% of a Prolog system's implementation
effort:-) ) hoping that an improved logic programming language,
usable as a mainstream software development tool, will eventually
emerge as a result.
Kernel Prolog's redesigned set of built-ins is based on Fluents,
stateful objects (organized in a Java class tree), which provide
control over the underlying interpeter and uniform interoperation
patterns with external object oriented and procedural languages.
Fluents include Answer Sources (first-class Interpreters) and a
number of other built-in Sources and Sinks which cover everything
from I/O operations to lazy, composable data structures.
You are invited to download the Kernel Prolog sources,
join the project and interact with developers and users through
Kernel Prolog's Web site, at:
http://www.binnetcorp.com/OpenCode/kernelprolog.html
The download area is also mirrored at:
http://www.cs.unt.edu/~tarau/kprolog/Main.html
The code is designed to be extensible, easy to modify and adapt,
and it is known to run on virtually any JDK 1.1 or 1.2 compatible Java.
A set of GUI building predicates and a simple IDE are provided as
a proof of concept of Kernel Prolog's smooth interoperation with the
underlying Java system.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Announcing release 1.3 of Hoard, a fast, scalable and memory-efficient
allocator for multithreaded applications on multiprocessors. Hoard
solves the heap contention problem caused when multiple threads
simultaneously call malloc() and free() (or new and delete).
Hoardscales linearly up to at least 14 processors and has guaranteed bounds
on memory consumption. You can use Hoard without changing any of your
source code: just link it in. Linking with Hoard can result in a
*dramatic* speedup of your application.
Supported systems include Linux, Solaris, IRIX (with pthreads and
sproc support), Windows NT, and with this release, the BeOS.
Hoard is distributed under the Lesser GNU Public License, so you may
freely distribute any application linked with Hoard. You can download

The NEXT MAJOR invention after PC is Internet
Computer (called IC). Internet computer will NOT have
any hard disks, floppy drives, cdrom drives but JUST
has CPU, RAM and Network card. The heart and blood of
Internet Computer is LINUX. Internet Computer (IC)
will use web-browsers like Netscape, MS IE 5 to access
internet and can run both Linux and Window95
programs!!
The following howto doc tells you how to build or buy
Internet Computer.
New version of Diskless-HOWTO v4.0 is released. It is

Subject: isapnp module for 2.2.x kernels
Date: Fri, 19 Nov 1999 01:32:21 GMT
Reply-To: gherlein@quicknet.net
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
FYI: we've backported the isapnp module from the 2.3.x kernels
to the stable 2.2.x kernels. Here's the info:
- -----------
ISAPNP Module for Linux 2.2.X Kernels
License: GPL
Version 0.1.0
Summary:
This tarball contains a the first hack at a backport of the new
isapnp module that is in the 2.3.X series kernel to work on Linux
2.2.X series kernels.
It is relatively untested. It creates the /proc/isapnp file and
seems to find all the isapnp devices in the system. You can read
the first isapnp device, though there seems to be an issue
iterating to find the next card. Any testing reports or bugs
found are kindly appreciated. Please send them to the author of
the backport:
Ed Okerson <eokerson@quicknet.net>
Updates:
Until this can get back into the kernel, you can always find the
latest version of this driver at:
http://www.quicknet.net/develop.htm
ftp://ftp.quicknet.net/Developer/Linux/isapnp
Credit:
Real credit goes to the original author Jaroslav Kysela
<perex@suse.cz> who did the fine work in the 2.3.X kernel in the
first place. However, Ed Okerson did the backport work to 2.2.x.
This backport is contributed back to the community by Quicknet
Technologies, Inc. We developed this to support use of our ixj.o
module for our Internet LineJACK/PhoneJACK/PhoneCARD products for
Internet Telephony. We hope it is useful to others.
To use:
make;make install
insmod isapnp
Then, if you have isapnp devices, you should see them in
/proc/isapnp. Please read the isapnp.txt file for information on
general use of the module.

We hope others find it useful too!
