SGI has decided to port the server part of MineSet, the leading data-mining and
award winning software for enterprises to the Linux platform. We are currently
soliciting beta sites who are interested in beta testing the Linux version of
the MineSet software. The software will include the Mineset server running on
Linux and a Windows client will be provided to connect to the MineSet server.
Connectivity to databases will be limited to Oracle 8.x databases and flat
files.

The details of the program are being finalized and if you are interested in

I'm pleased to announce availability of gNewt version 0.01.

gNewt is a compatible newt-0.50 library.
gNewt is based on GTK 1.2.x.

It provides a fast way to convert old text mode configuration programs
(ie : Redhat's sndconfig or Debian's pppconfig ...) to new fully
graphical programs under X-Window. You can recompile newt based
programs without changing any line of code. You should only modify
the Makefile by removing "-lslang -lnewt" and adding
"-lgdk -lgtk -lgnewt".

Source code can be downloaded from :

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I am pleased to announce the initial alpha release of the
Open Source Audio Library Project V0.1.

The Open Source Audio Library Project is a C++ class library
that contains everything one needs to build an audio
application. It contains a powerful chaining concept so
programmers can build an audio application by selecting the
building blocks they desire and arranging them in a chain.
The data will then be processed by pulling the data through
the chain. It currently supports WAV and MP3 formats and
contains classes for playing, recording, time recording,
editing, and spectrum display. This library does not use a GUI,
and thus lets the programmer select the GUI of their choice.

Currently the library supports Linux with other UNIX like
platforms planned. It is licensed LGPL.

The software and details can be found at the homepage:

From: Graham Freeman <g-freeman@adfa.edu.au>
Subject: Quikscript program for typesetting and text layout
Date: Fri, 5 Nov 1999 22:44:38 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

This posting announces the release of a new version of Quikscript
and an editor for preparing Quikscript documents.
Quikscript is a PostScript text formatting and typesetting program.
It enables documents to be prepared on any type of hardware, using
visible layout marks to control the appearance of the output, and
produce output on a PostScript printer by despatching Qs and the
document file to the device. No processing is performed by the
host hardware; all processing is done within the printer.

The advantage that Quikscript provides, other than portability,
is precision of control over output. Because it is written in
PostScript, it is interpreted at run-time within the printer.
It is possible to create documents that modify the Quikscript
program during execution. It is very easy to include other
PostScript programs or fragments with Quikscript. It is possible
to use special PostScript fonts, such as hand-generated ones.
Graphics generated from a variety of sources can be easily included,
as can text output from computer programs. It is possible to embed
Quikscript within an EPS document, such as an advertisement or an
invoice.

Up till now, Quikscript documents have had to be prepared using a text
editor, and operating system commands used to preview the document or
print it. A separate program, Qse, is now provided to simplify preparation,
preview and printing of Quikscript documents. Qse is written in Java, so
it too should be portable to most platforms, provided that a Java virtual
machine is installed.

The Quikscript distribution is available by anonymous ftp from
"ftp.adfa.edu.au" in the directory "pub/postscript". Qse can be obtained
from
   ftp://ftp.adfa.edu.au/pub/postscript/Qse.jar
and there is a README file for both Quikscript and Qse in
   ftp://ftp.adfa.edu.au/pub/postscript/Qs_README.html
Both Qs and Qse may also be accessed through the World Wide Web at URL
   http://www.cs.adfa.edu.au/~gfreeman

Subject: KOPI - a Completely Open Source Java Compiler
Date: Fri, 5 Nov 1999 22:40:50 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

With the arrival of the more sang-froid months comes the time for DMS to
proudly display the fruits of its recent summer endeavours.

As a result of some not inconsiderable developmental activity, DMS
announces the public release of KOPI, the first fully functioning open
source Java compiler, written and developed entirely in the Java
language.

KOPI is an extensible Java application which has already been extended
to allow integration with, among other systems, SQL. The result of this
is the creation of a system similar to SQLJ, but with improved
functionality.

The KOPI suite comes complete with a Java assembler and disassembler as
well as extensive diagnostic tools which are actively updated by a team
of committed full-time engineers. These self-same engineers are also
responsible for maintaining the system as a whole from the DMS
nerve-centres based in both Vienna, Austria, and Sophia Antipolis,
France.

Our flagship product, kjc, is the only java compiler fully written in
java that comes complete with support for the latest Java Language
Specification from Sun. It also has a useful set of new warnings and a
descent optimizer. This product has just been bundled with Kaffe
(http://www.kaffe.org) as their default java compiler.

The system has been developed by DMS Decision Management Systems,
(Vienna, Austria) with the support of ESSI (Ecole Superieur en Sciences
Informatiques) in France.

KOPI is currently integrated in various commercial applications and is
available under the terms and conditions of the GNU General Public
Licence as published by the Free Software Foundation.

Subject: help2man 1.019 - generate simple manual pages
Date: Fri, 5 Nov 1999 22:43:14 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Overview
********

`help2man' is a tool for automatically generating simple manual pages
from program output.

It is intended to provide an easy way for software authors to include
a manual page in their distribution without having to maintain that
document.

Given a program which produces reasonably standard `--help' and
`--version' outputs, `help2man' will attempt to re-arrange that output
into something which resembles a manual page.

For Immediate Release

LINCOLN, ON - Nov 1/99

- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pretend you installed the full Red Hat Linux 6.0. Name at least 30
configuration mistakes, security loopholes and missing files. We'll
give you 15 seconds. Could you do it?
You could, if you were running System Manager in a Box.
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PegaSoft is pleased to announce the release of System Manager in a Box
(SMiaB) v1.0. A multipurpose system administration tool, SMiaB offers
tuning suggestions, locates configuration problems, monitors system
activity and provides job control. Using artificial intelligence
techniques, SMiaB can perform more than 2000 system checks, reporting
not only which files have problems, but which systems are affected and
why.

Version 1.0 has been tested for Caldera 2.2, Mandrake 6.0, Red Hat 6.0,
S.u.S.E. 5.3, S.u.S.E. 6.1 and Slackware 4.0. The program supports HTML
and CGI, and is expandable through simple plug-ins.

System Manager in a Box, screen shots, and a guided tour are available
at the PegaSoft home page at http://www.vaxxine.com/pegasoft. The
software is $35 US shareware for personal use, and $249 for the
registered business package (including CD-ROM, illustrated manual, and
customer support).
