=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

New Release: LinkScan 6.0 has increased speed with less memory

San Jose, CA, October 26, 1999. Electronic Software Publishing
Corporation (Elsop) introduces LinkScan version 6.0.

"The dynamic nature of the World Wide Web means that hyperlinks
can become outdated rapidly as sites relocate to different servers
and, as structure and content are updated. Experience has shown
that as many as 20 percent of hyperlinks can become outdated in
just a few months. Even maintaining the integrity of the links
within a given site can be a problem, especially if more than one
person is involved in updating the pages, " said Kenneth Churilla,
president and co-founder of Electronic Software Publishing.

"Webmasters concerned with the quality of their site should
revalidate all hyperlinks on a regular basis; at least weekly and
whenever changes are made to content. Manual testing of that
intensity is essential to maintain quality, but prohibitively
time consuming and expensive. LinkScan solves the problem by
automating the task," explained Malcolm Hoar, chairman and
co-founder of the company.

LinkScan is the industrial strength link checking and website
management tool for Unix, Linux, Windows 98 and Windows NT operating
systems. It is the most accurate, fastest and most scaleable product
available and it is highly customizable. It also does HTML validation.
LinkScan creates two types of publication quality SiteMaps and it is
professionally supported. LinkScan 6.0 includes some significant
enhancements to the scanning modules.

Enhancements to the Windows version of LinkScan include the following.
Web sites are now scanned via multi-tasking HTTP navigation
and multi-tasking validation of external links is also supported.
Users can specify the number of slave processes to be used in the
scan in the graphical windows interface. The time-out/retry logic has been
greatly improved when checking slow or hung links. These changes eliminate
prior restrictions due to limitations of the Perl implementation for
Windows and greatly improves performance.

Enhancements to the Unix version of LinkScan include the following.
Web sites are now scanned via multi-tasking HTTP navigation and
the memory requirements are significantly reduced when validating
external links with multiple processes.

These performance improvements will be quite significant for
web sites that have a lot of dynamic content that must be processed
with HTTP.

LinkScan checks websites through either the file system or the
web server. Both processes are necessary. The file system process
is ten times faster than the web server process and it enables LinkScan
to identify orphan files. Checking links through the web server
enables LinkScan to check active elements such as CGI's, image maps,
external links and Server Side Includes. Having both capabilities also
enables the user to mirror their production server on either their
workstation and/or a development server.

Some of LinkScan performance features include:

Benchmarked at over 40,000 links checked per hour
Can easily check websites with 50,000 or more external links
Quickly tests sites with over 250,000 pages
Multi-threaded processing can check over 60 links concurrently
Unique blend of File System & HTTP navigation for link testing
scaleable to any size web site and multiple sites of any size
Support of server aliases and server redirections
Facility for web access via a Proxy Server
Analyze dynamic pages created by CGIs, ASPs, and RDBMSs
Smart Probing of remote links for ultra-high accuracy
History of problem links helps avoid over testing external links
Control features for reduced processing of duplicate links
Efficient interactive processing produces reports rapidly

LinkScan is being used by such large and diverse organizations as Sun
Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, the United States Department of Defense,
the Ford Motor Company, NASA, Ericsson, KPMG and the White House.

LinkScan operates on all Unix Servers (including AIX, BSDI, FreeBSD,
Digital Unix, HP/UX, IRIX, Linux, and SunOS/Solaris flavors),
Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98 with Perl 5. Free fully functional
evaluation copies of LinkScan 6.0 may be downloaded from the
company's website at: http://www.elsop.com/

LinkScan Server Version 6.0 is a free upgrade to owners of
any version from 4.0 to 5.5.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Linuxlinks.com, http://www.linuxlinks.com/ introduces the Linux
Package Guide, another free service dedicated to the Linux
community.

The Package Guide is located at http://www.firstlinux.com/package/
and contains information on the core packages of the RedHat, Suse,
Caldera and Debian distributions for the Intel platform. The database
is fully searchable allowing you to find out whether a particular
distribution supports your favorite application, and moreover, in which
package that application is stored. Currently both .rpm and .deb
packages are supported and we anticipate adding further distributions
as their use becomes more widespread.

The Package Guide will be regularly updated with the latest packages
and contributions from the Linux community are always welcome.

We would like to express our thanks to Linux Central,
http://www.linuxcentral.com/, who are sponsoring this exciting
development.

Subject: The Linux Console Tools 0.2.3
Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 22:11:50 GMT
Reply-To: ydirson@altern.org

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Stable release 0.2.3 of the Linux Console Tools is now available from
http://www.altern.org/ydirson/soft/lct/.

Here are the release informations:

This is release 0.2.3 of the Linux console-tools.

This release is a bugfix release for the 0.2.x series, and
adds Italian, Danish, and Estonian messages.
 See ChangeLog for details.

0.2.0 was the first of a stable branch. The data files (keymaps,
fonts and tables) formerly part of this package have been moved to a
 new console-data package.

The 0.2.x branch will only get bug fixes and critically missing
features - all development will be done on the still-to-come 0.3.x
 branch.

PLEASE NOTE that this release has not yet support for the CP
fontfile format back yet. It has been integrated in development
 version 0.3.0.

Although it is now quite stable, this package is currently under
development: use it at your own risks. However, it should already be
a good replacement for `kbd', and you might like the features not
found in the latter, but (as usual) you have NO WARANTY of any kind.

Some interface-level features are still liable to change (program names,
option names, etc.).

Much work is needed to really get Unicode stuff usable. This will be
one of my primary goals. It will probably imply hacking the kernel as
well for some features, but the kernel-part is being thoroughly
rewritten by the GGI project, so don't hold you breath...

This package is based on `kbd-0.94', and is mostly up to date with
0.99, of which it corrects some bugs, and to which it adds several
features (Message i18n, Screen-font-map fallback tables, 16-bit
Application-Charset Maps (also called "console maps" or "screen
maps"), can now output PSF files and use "-" to read/write most files
to stdin/stdout, can make use of the G1 charset slot, etc.).

Please send all bug reports, suggestions, or anything else to myself,
(but take a look at the "TODO" file first), feedback will be greatly
appreciated.

Please get in touch with me before starting to modify this package, to
prevent duplicated work - it's enough work to keep in sync with new
kbd releases until we merge; as this code is expected to evolve quite
rapidly, it would also be helpful that not too many persons work on
the same pieces of code at the same time, to ease integration.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hello!

I am pleased to announce a first publicly available BETA version
of CCCPP 0.8.07, a Clipper Preprocessor:

                   http://www.nexus.hu/cccpp

CCCPP is a clone of preprocessor of Clipper 5.2. I tested it heavily under
Debian 2.1. I compiled about 500,000 lines with it without problems. So it's
unlikely there are still serious bugs in it.

Supported platforms:

- - - Linux glibc, e.g Debian 2.1.

- - - Windows NT 4.0 (maybe 3.51)

Subject: sysstat-2.1 - The SAR and IOSTAT commands for Linux
Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 22:13:44 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi everybody,

sysstat version 2.1, containing the sar and iostat commands, is now available
for all of you using Linux.
You can find it on sunsite.unc.edu, in the /pub/Linux/system/status directory
:
45kB sysstat-2.1.tar.gz

Please note that it is now available in RPM format in the same directory, both
as sources and binaries :
47kB sysstat-2.1-1.src.rpm
28kB sysstat-2.1-1.i386.rpm

New features include :

* Added memory statistics to sar: free/shared/buffer/cached pages.
* Bugs fixed : the sar and iostat commands can now work on non SMP-machines
even if the kernel is compiled with SMP support enabled.
Fixed a bug that made the time displayed by iostat wrong when reading stats
back from a file.
* Code modified to avoid division by zero in some _rare_ cases.
* Option -h added to sar to periodically print header.

Subject: WWW: Linux FAQ for newbies & wannabes UPDATED
Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 22:17:10 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hello Everyone,

A few weeks have passed and many updates were made, both to the form
and to the content of the FAQ. I already received quite a few helpful
comments regarding improving the FAQ. I look forward to more of your
input.

- -- The announcement follows -----------------------------------------

My all new Linux FAQ has been created and is available from my
  home page
     http://www.bigfoot.com/~swietanowski --> "Linux FAQ"
  or directly
     http://www.bigfoot.com/~swietanowski/LinuxFAQ/
It is meant to be useful to new Linux users, as well as people
who consider trying Linux but are undecided and want to know what
  to expect.

I realized, I end up answering the same questions on news groups over
and over again. It gets boring after a while, as you might imagine.
The answers I put up there are (hopefully) more comprehensive,
carefully worded and in general better than what you might expect me
to post just off the top of my head.

The collection is expanding and getting reorganized. If you have
proposals for new entries (either ones that you'd be willing to
contribute, or ones you'd like me to prepare), I will be glad to hear
from you. All input is appreciated, both positive and critical.
The positive comments make me feel better, the negative ones help
me improve my page ;-)

I'm not trying to replace the "official" Linux FAQs maintained by
the Linux Documentation Project.

NOTE: When bookmarking, use the redirector address given above and
not the actual page address. I am looking for another web hosting
service and will move sooner or later (unless the current host,
Crosswinds, will improve their web page maintenence facilities).

Regards,
