From: Ben Ross <ben@proximity.com.au>
Subject: Xenon 0.6.4 - A GUI X-based text editor
Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 21:58:38 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Xenon 0.6.4 - (yet another) GUI X-based text editor.

Where:
- ------
http://www.proximity.com.au/~ben/xenon.html
ftp://ftp.proximity.com.au/pub/xenon/

Eventually:

ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/apps/editors/X/xenon-0.6.4.tar.gz

Xenon is a simple, small and fast X-based text editor. It is most
useful for editing plain text files with no fuss.

Xenon does not use any GUI library for efficiency reasons. Unfortunately
this means some basic features one would expect from an X program may not
be working yet.

Features include:
  * Speed, simplicity and low memory use.
  * Search, substring or regular expression (Linux only)
  * Unlimited undo/redo.
  * Display of line numbers, jump to line number
  * Some X resource configuration: mostly command keys, some colours
  * Man page!
  * Some error dialogs.
  * Multiple files in separate windows.
  * Open multiple files from the command line
  * Run Once (only one process per uid and X connection IP number)

Limitations include (currently):
  * Non-proportional font only.
  * No macros.

Compiles on: Linux, SGI, probably most other UNIX implementations with g++.

Requires: C++ compiler (egcs or SGI compiler)

Copying: GPL

** What happened to the Red Hat discs? Well, Red Hat changed their policy **
** regarding the use of the Red Hat name. Basically, if it isn't the boxed **
** set it can't be called Red Hat Linux. So, we've rebadged ours as Eridani **
** Linux. It is still basically the Linux Distribution from FTP.REDHAT.COM! **

The install CDROMs include an El Torito boot record, which, on supported
hardware make them bootable.

The Eridani 6.1 CDs are made to order, and as such, will have all the
updates from ftp.redhat.com to that time on the CD. Rather than having
them in a separate updates directory, we have opted to make them part of
the install, so you automatically have an up-to-date Linux system.

The distribution takes up virtually all the space on the CDs, squeezing
all of the extras out. When Eridani Applications 6.1 becomes available I
will probably add the extras to that disc. If that doesn't work out we'll
bring out a separate extras CD.

A second CD is available, which contains all the source code. Eridani
Linux is just too big now to have all the binaries and sources on the one
CD. This CD is also available, also for £ 3.50.

The Debian CD set is the Official Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 (slink) 2CD
distribution from their Official Debian ISOs.

The Mandrake CDs are based on a Mandrake-sourced ISO.

For more information about the discs, and how to order, please visit our
Web site at:
                http://linux.amush.cx

International orders accepted, but due to the cost of bank charges and
international mail, the prices will be slightly higher.

Sorry, we cannot accept credit cards. Cash (Pounds sterling preferred!)
and cheques drawn on a UK bank are accepted. International bank transfers
are also accepted, however they are subject to a £ 2.00 charge due to bank
charges. There is a £ 1.50 charge for postage and packaging for up to 2
CDs within the UK, variable for international customers.

From: jc@atcmp.nl (Jan Christiaan van Winkel)
Subject: atsar-1.5 - system activity reporter
Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 22:09:40 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Announcing atsar 1.5

The command atsar can be used to detect performance-bottlenecks
on LINUX-systems, similar to the command sar on other UNIX-platforms.
Atsar offers the possibility to show what is happening on the system
at this moment (by supplying an interval and the number of samples as
command-line arguments). However it also keeps track of the system-load
in the past by maintaining history-files from which information can be
extracted.

The current version of atsar gathers statistics about the utilization
of CPU's, disks, memory and swap, and network-interfaces (TCP/IP).

Atsar for Linux can be obtained from:
       ftp://ftp.atcomputing.nl/pub/tools/linux/atsar_linux-1.5-1.i386.rpm
       ftp://ftp.atcomputing.nl/pub/tools/linux/atsar_linux-1.5-1.src.rpm

_______________________________________________________________________________

Modifications in version 1.5 compared to version 1.4:

     - Various bug fixes.

     - Code cleanup (superfluous code removed).

     - Performance optimizations.

     - Consequent usage of /proc instead of reading kernel-structures
        from /dev/kmem.
        Consequences:
           * no root-permission (setuid on atsadc) needed any more
             to access /dev/kmem

           * if kernel-structures change between various kernel-versions,
atsar still shows proper figures via /proc

     - Additional counters printed for TCP and network-interfaces.

     - New counters gathered/printed for NFS/RPC and sockets.

     - Ported & tested on Alpha-based systems.

     - Improved man-pages (ALL output-fields are described now).

     - Delivered as RPM (i386 and source).

     - Features to register the number of FTP- and HTTP-transfers (optional).

Some info from the man page:

ATSAR(1) local ATSAR(1)

NAME
       atsar -- system activity report

SYNOPSIS
       atsar [ -flags ] t [ n ]

       atsar [ -flags ] [ -s time ] [ -e time ] [ -i sec ] [
       -f file | -n day# ]

DESCRIPTION
The program atsar(1) can be used to deliver statistics.
The design of this program can be compared with the stan-
dard sadc(1) and sar(1) programs being delivered for other
       UNIX-implementations, i.e. a data-collector which reads
the statistical counters (from the files under the direc-
       tory /proc ) and a presentation-program which formats the
counters and presents them on stdout.

In the first synopsis line, atsar samples cumulative
activity counters in the kernel at n intervals of t sec-
onds, where t should be 1 or greater. The default value of
       n is 1.

The type of command shown in the first synopsis line imme-
diately sends the output for every option specified to
standard output. If only one type of statistical counter
is requested, the header is printed once and after every t
seconds the statistical counters are shown for that
period. If several options are requested, a header is
printed per sample followed by the statistical counters
       for that period.

In the second synopsis line (no sampling interval speci-
fied), atsar extracts data from a previously recorded
file, either the one specified by the -f option or, by
default, the daily activity data file
/var/log/atsar/atsadd for the current day dd (day of
month). Alternatively the -n option can be used to specify
the day of the month from which counters should be shown.

The starting and ending times of the report can be defined
using the -s and -e time arguments of the form hh:mm. The
-i option selects records at sec second intervals. Other-
wise, all intervals found in the data file are reported.

The -flags option is used to define which statistical
       counters are presented:

-A Statistics of all possible options.

-u Statistics about CPU utilization (average and per
            cpu).

-d Statistics about utilization of the disks.

-D Statistics about utilization of disk-partitions. This
option might require a kernel-patch in order to get
extended counters from the file /proc/partitions.
This patch can be obtained from the site
            ftp://ftp.uk.linux.org/pub/linux/sct/fs/profiling/.
If this patch is not installed, the message "not
supported" is printed when using this flag.

       -r Current memory- and swap-occupation.

-p Statistics about paging- and swapping-activity.

-I Statistics about the number interrupts per second.

-v Statistics about utilization of kernel-tables.

-l Statistics about the network interfaces.

-L Statistics about errors for network-interfaces.

-w Statistics about IP network traffic.

-W Statistics about errors for IP traffic.

-m General statistics about ICMP layer activity.

-M Per-type statistics about ICMP layer activity.

-t Statistics about TCP network traffic.

-T Statistics about errors for TCP-traffic.

-U Statistics about UDP network traffic.

-N Statistics about NFS server- and client-requests.

-E Statistics about errors for NFS server- and client-
            requests.

       -R Statistics about the RPC-calls for NFS-requests. A
transfer-rate is given per type of RPC-request (per-
centage of total number of RPC-requests).

-F Optional statistics about the ftp-traffic. This flag
only produces relevant output if the script atsaftp
is activated with regular intervals (by the script
            atsa1 ).

-H Optional statistics about the http-traffic. This flag
only produces relevant output if the script atsahttp
is activated with regular intervals (by the script
            atsa1 ).

Rt-Control's uCsimm speeds development of Linux based Internet
   appliances

   For Immediate Release:

Rt-Control of Toronto announces the release of the uCsimm Embedded
   Microcontroller Linux platform.

The uCsimm, a complete platform enabling implementation of embedded
systems running uClinux is now shipping from Rt-Control to OEMs in
engineering quantities. Volume shipments will be available in the
first quarter of 2000. The uCsimm is a 30 pin SIMM form factor
Microcontroller running the uClinux operating system. With the
uCsimm engineers can quickly and easily design and prototype connected
products economically and in a matter of hours that would otherwise
take months and prove cost prohibitive. No other embedded platform
combines the set of features available with the uCsimm and its ease of
   deployment in end user applications.

The uCsimm, with on board RS232, Ethernet, LCD controller, SPI serial
bus and parallel I/O was designed as a component level solution to
enable embedded Linux systems in industrial controls, instrumentation,
consumer electronics and other systems that can benefit from Internet
connectivity. The uClinux distribution includes everything needed
to rapidly develop Linux enabled hardware based on Rt-Control's
   uCsimm Embedded Linux Platform.

   About uClinux

uClinux (Embedded Microcontroller Linux) is the first Linux
derivative targeted to small high volume embedded systems. Supporting
the popular Motorola 68k and Coldfire families of microcontroller
chips, uClinux lets the embedded systems engineer design a deeply
embedded system using the full featured Linux OS. The uClinux OS takes
up less than 1Meg of FLASH ROM and less than 1Meg of RAM, no disk or
other costly components are required only a bare MC683xx
microcontroller and memory (typical of embedded systems).

   About Rt-Control Inc.

Rt-Control Inc. provides commercial support and development
solutions for the embedded Linux market. Rt-Control was formed in 1999
to provide commercial support for the uClinux operating system
originally ported from Linux2.0 by Kenneth Albanowski and D. Jeff
Dionne. Since the inception of the company, Rt-Control has focussed on
enabling hardware solutions that utilise uClinux.

The shipment of uCsimm marks a milestone in the development of the
embedded Linux marketplace. For the first time, a complete solution is
available that takes embedded Linux products from concept to
deployment for high volume applications with a complete development
kit. The official uClinux distribution is available from
   Rt-Control on CD-ROM for 30.00USD. The uC68EZ328-2E8L16 uCsimm
complete embedded Linux on a SIMM module is available from 210.00USD
in single piece quantities with OEM quantities available first quarter
2000. Rt-Control provides developer support contracts for development
   of embedded applications employing uClinux.

Since the uCsimm prototype was demonstrated at the July 1999
Comdex show held in Toronto, Rt-Control has been accepting advanced
orders. With the shipment of the uCsimm and uClinux CD, Rt-Control
Inc. continues to demonstrate leadership and vision within the
   Embedded Linux Marketplace.

"uClinux is setting the standard for small embedded systems with
its royalty free TCP/IP stack and a POSIX API. I see the
possibilities for embedded systems being greatly expanded by our
work. We will see many new classes of devices emerging based on
uClinux. The end user will likely not know that these things are
running Linux. The Linux OS is a good fit for embedded systems. Now
with the uCsimm and uClinux it is finally possible to quickly turn
     embedded systems using Linux"

Subject: PIKT, Problem Informant/Killer Tool, v1.7.0 released
Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 22:09:23 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

PIKT, Problem Informant/Killer Tool, version 1.7.0

HIGHLIGHTS: Ported to HP-UX. Enhanced ease of use by: adding a
new simplified configs_starter file set; using macro tricks to reduce
config file clutter; introducing preprocessor line indentation; adding
more helpful commentary and debugging. Introduced a new application:
documentation management and text formatting. Fixed several non-
    trivial bugs.

"This is by far one of the most interesting/powerful tools I have
seen for Linux administration... an extremely interesting tool."
--Kurt Seifried, Linux Administrators Security Guide
      (https://www.seifried.org/lasg)

PIKT, an innovative new paradigm for administering heterogeneous networked
workstations, is a multi-functional tool for monitoring systems, reporting
and fixing problems, and managing system configurations. PIKT comprises an
embedded scripting language with unique, labor-saving features; a
sophisticated script (and system config file) preprocessor, scheduler, and
installer; and other useful tools. Like a Swiss Army Knife, PIKT is a
category buster with many, many different uses limited only by your
ingenuity and imagination.

PIKT is distributed under the GNU General Public License. Available now
for GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, HP-UX, Solaris, and SunOS. (Other ports are planned.)
For more info, and complete source code, documentation, and data files (all
50,000+ lines of it), please visit the PIKT Web site at:
