New Home for the Graphics Muse
In an effort to bring graphics news and issues to readers more quickly,
Michael J. Hammel, author of the Graphics Muse column in the Linux
Gazette and TheGimp.com web site, has launched a new Graphics
Muse web site - Graphics-Muse.com.
Denver, Colorado (Oct 18, 1999) -- After almost 3 years in the Linux
Gazette, the Graphics Muse column is graduating to its own web site.
I've enjoyed my time working with SSC, and especially Margie
Richardson. I continue to encourage new writers to take their first steps
into the world of writing with submissions to one of the oldest and most
trusted Linux online sites. But the development of the 'Muse column
each month, combined with the added work for doing TheGimp.com, was
taking too long each month and I didn't feel my readers needs were
properly being met.
With the Graphics Muse web site, I now have the ability to provide links
to more graphics resources, post more timely notices about software
and product releases, and make available articles on a wide range of
topics more often than once a month.
Why another Linux site? Most Linux news sites address the horizontal
markets - servers and back end systems. Few sites address the
vertical markets, where the majority of users really do their work.
Graphics is a fast growth area for Linux users. My intent is to provide
useful information to end users interested in Linux as a graphics tools
platform.
Comments and feedback on site design are always welcome. Anyone
interested in writing for the 'Muse, or for any other online or print
publication, should fee free to contact me. I'd be happy to help you get
started in writing in any way I can.
The Graphics Muse web site is located at http://graphics-muse.com.
For more information, contact mjhammel@graphics-muse.org.

Hello everybody,
%Changelog
19.10.1999
- - detected some incompatabilities with RH6.1 (I do not have it), please look
into the FAQ-section for workarounds.
- - added configuration for more than one isdn-card.
- - FAQ-section (well just 3 FAQs right now :-)).
%description
As RedHat does not seem to care for ISDN I wrote a
few scripts on my own with a little bit of inspiration by
isdn4net and the SuSE-startup-files. There is a spanish
version of this document available.
This is tested for RH 5.2 in combination with PAP-PPP,
dynamic IP and an Elsa QuikStep 1000 ISA-card (only
hisax is supported by these scripts out of the box).
I now have tested this one with the ``german''
Halloween III which is a descendant of RH6.0.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I am pleased to announce that Aegis 3.20 is now available.
Aegis is a transaction-based software configuration management
system. It provides a framework within which a team of developers
may work on many changes to a program independently, and Aegis
coordinates integrating these changes back into the master source
of the program, with as little disruption as possible.
You are invited to visit
http://www.canb.auug.org.au/~millerp/aegis/
for a more complete description of what Aegis is, and access to
the download files.
For information about what new features are available in this
release, please see the README file available at the above site.

RRR Sorority Division presents
PIMPPA
Perverse and Infernal Manner of Porn Preserving Arrangement
v0.3.0 / 12.Oct.1999
1. Legal junk
- -------------
Released under GNU General Public License version 2.
2. What is this anyway
- ----------------------
Imagine the unfortunate situation where much more stuff
(and even more crap, spam, etc) comes from the Net than you are
bothered to handle manually. Shall we say, several hundred
files daily, totalling to over hundreds of thousands of files
in the long run. Direct net connection and access to an
adequate news server easily provides such conditions.
PIMPPA is designed to help in such a case, to minimize the required
human interaction, striving for complete "hands free" operation,
where you could once a week (or so) drop by and check out
the already filtered and polished catch. The system is suited
for all types of files, but it has been designed with PORN in mind. :)
PIMPPA includes automatic tools for newsgroup leeching, decoding,
duplicate discarding and further file processing. For example,
files downloaded from newsgroups can be automatically deposited
to certain directories (or deleted, if not wanted) based on
knowledge gathered in the past.
PIMPPA also provides fast command line interfaces for
file access and backup operations.
In addition, there's a GUI.
3. Requirements
- ---------------
- Linux 2.x.x
- MySQL. RPMs of v3.22.25 will do just fine.
You can get them free for noncommercial use from "http://www.tcx.se/"
- Suck (v4.2.1 will do) for downloading newsgroups. Should be available
at "ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/news/transport"
- Uudeview (v0.5pl13 will do) for decoding. At the moment of
writing this, see "http://www.uni-frankfurt.de/~fp/uudeview/".
- GTK v1.2+ for GUI. See "http://www.gtk.org/"
4. Changes since last announcement (v0.1.1)
- -------------------------------------------
v0.3.0
- Now developed using MySQL v3.22.25 RPM version.
- Added "NEEDLETTER" option to "pimppa.h". Filenames with no
alphabetical character before the last '.' are as default
discarded by "automaton".
- Added "Move" option to "bowser". It moves files around.
- Added "Select All" and "Unselect all" menu choices to "bowser".
Filemenu options (Delete, View, Edit, Move) now affect all the
currently selected files.
- "pmv" now moves files from current dir to any filearea.
- "pmv" now mercilessly overwrites any existing destination files.
- Removed obsolete "pmv2".
- Added optional nazi behaviour for "automaton". Switch "-n" makes
automaton discard all downloaded files which do not match any
already existing pattern in 'p_assign' table.
- Added optional nazi behaviour for "ptest". Switch "-n" makes
ptest delete all files which fail the integrity check.
Use with CAUTION. Incorrect integrity check tools or invalid
values supplied to p_types -table may cause massive file loss.
- Added transformed filename precognition to "automaton" dupechecking.
- Misc small changes to "automaton".
- "cleaner" is now able to delete all files which failed integrity check.
- Some further modifications and fixes to "cleaner".
- Minimun filename length of which an assign pattern will be
created (by various pimppa utils) can now be specified in
"src/pimppa.h". Default is 4 (filename extension is not counted).
- PIMPPA's MySQL username changed to a more logical one. Access features
are now a little better too. User in "etc/passwd" is not needed.
- Negative destination area in assign patterns now causes
matching file deletion by automaton.
- Assign pattern scheme changed again into a better one (hopefully).
- Filename-mangling bug in "ptrans" is probably now fixed
- Modified "automaton" to read newsgroup names from new pimppa
table called "p_groups". The table also contains default destination
areas, e.g. all decoded stuff from the news will be moved to
that destination area, unless some assign pattern matches.
- New area type: AREA_INCOMING. Imaginary areas are no longer
necessary. Contents of incoming areas will not be backupped or
transformed. You should assign newsgroup destinations to
incoming areas.
- You can now specify an SQL-style newsgroup match pattern for
"automaton" with argument [-h <pattern>]. Default is all.
- Added newsgroup add/remove tool to "bowser".
- PIMPPA utils now perform sql string escaping, so that filenames
with characters like '\' and "'" are accepted to the system.
- Delay times of "automaton" can now be specified on the command line
- Changed the use of external shell "mv" and "cp" commands to
internal ones.
- Several minor modifications to "bowser".
- New command "bin/pkill". Deletes files physically and from the DB,
giving them a negative assign pattern so that they will be next
time 'DELETED on sight' by "automaton". Use with CAUTION.
- Added several options to "pnewarea". Now you can specify area
to be AREA_NOTRANS, AREA_INCOMING and area_id upon creation.
- New command "bin/pnewgrp". Its used to add new newsgroups to the
system.
v0.2.0
- A GUI called "bowser". See "gui/" and "bin/bowser". GUI compilation
requires GTK+ v1.2 or newer. The GUI is still mostly a toy,
but you might get some overview from it.
- Better "pattern matching" scheme. Should cover some more cases
and operate in a more orderly fashion. :)
- Fixed a trivial path bug in "scripts/p_maint"
- Added a numbercheck option to "cleaner".
- Incorporated the functionality of "pmassdel" and "cleandir"
into "cleaner". Obsolete two utils have been deleted.

This is to announce the release, after many delays, of version 2.3 of the
GNU plotting utilities ("plotutils") package, including version 3.0 of its
centerpiece: GNU libplot, a C/C++ library for exporting 2-D vector graphics
in many file formats.
This is a major release. For a full description of the package, see
http://www.gnu.org/software/plotutils/plotutils.html .
The source code for the new release is available as a 3.1 megabyte gzipped
tar file. It's at the main GNU ftp site, at
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/plotutils/plotutils-2.3.tar.gz , and it's at all
active GNU mirrors too (see below for a list). RPMs for Red Hat GNU/Linux
systems have been uploaded to Red Hat's ftp site, and they should appear
soon at all Red Hat mirrors.
Here are some details of the new features in version 2.3.
o Support for WebCGM output. WebCGM format is a version of CGM
(Computer Graphics Metafile) format that's designed for Web use.
WebCGM plug-ins for Web browsers are starting to appear, and it
may become the standard vector graphics format on the Web. See
http://www.cgmopen.org for more.
o New, thread-safe APIs (application programming interfaces)
for the libplot graphics library. Libplot is now compatible
with Posix multithreading.
o Documentation on the size of the libplot viewport, and where
it's positioned on libplot's output page. It's now possible
to do reliable full-page imaging.
o Several bad bugs in `libplotter' (the C++ interface to libplot)
have been fixed.
o Innumerable minor bugs have been fixed.
Planned enhancements to libplot now include support for PNG and support for
SVG (the new vector graphics format being pushed by the W3 consortium, see
http://www.w3.org ). Also, a speedup of libplot's direct X11 support.
As always, all comments, bug reports and suggestions for improvements are
welcome. It would be a good idea to mail them to bug-gnu-utils@gnu.org,
to give other people the chance to respond.
Enjoy.
