=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

GNU libxmi, a new 2-D rasterization library, is now available. This is its
first public release (version 1.1.1).

libxmi is located at ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/libxmi/libxmi-1.1.1.tar.gz
and at all active GNU mirrors (see below for a list). The Web page for
libxmi is http://www.gnu.org/software/libxmi/libxmi.html .

What is libxmi?  It's a C library for rasterizing (i.e., `scan-converting')
2-D vector graphics primitives such as wide polygonal lines, circular and
elliptic arcs, and filled polygons. It's based on the machine-independent
vector graphics code in the sample X Window System server, which was
written over a decade ago by Keith Packard and Bob Scheifler of the
X Consortium, Brian Kelleher (now VP at 3dfx), Joel McCormack, Todd Newman,
and Ken Whaley. Some rendering extensions have been added, such as support
for multicolored dashing patterns.

Despite its origins, libxmi is completely decoupled from X11. It uses its
own two-stage graphics pipeline, and it draws vector graphics onto a
user-supplied matrix of pixels, not onto an on-screen window. But it
maintains pixel-level compatibility with X11's drawing functions,
such as XDrawLines() and XDrawArcs().

libxmi can easily be installed as a 2-D rendering module in other graphics
packages. It's very customizable. At installation time you can redefine
its `pixel' datatype, or modify it so that it uses alpha compositing
instead of the Painter's Algorithm (the default).

Enjoy! All suggestions for enhancements are welcome, as are bug reports.

MEETING NOTICE
==============

  Central Ohio Linux Users Group

            Wed., 27 October 1999, 17:00 to 19:00 local

Meeting Presentation
====================

The main presentation:

1. Python Rules!

Phil Jensen of the group offers:

I've been using Python for the first time recently, and I'm in
hacker heaven! I hereby volunteer to do a meeting presentation
on it. (I don't plan to distribute a lot of introductory
materials, though - the Python doc at www.python.org is so good
that it would be silly to duplicate it.)

Starting Saturday (so maybe a total of 20 hours work) I have
written a 600-line script which embodies a parser for most of
Fortran (don't ask!). This includes a couple of shifts in design
as better ideas occurred to me.

I like everything about this language, whereas there are many
things about Perl that I don't like.

2. There'll, no doubt, be a smattering of local `Experts' to
offer their thoughts for `general Q and A's, describing
varied techniques for `dog-licking-cat' Linux/unix high-level
problem solving in more newbie-friendly terms. [`dog-licking-cat'
in the sense that local gurus and wizards need to remember to carefully
explain their thought process in `solving' an issue -- to a `newbie'
saying `RTFM MAN 1 PASSWD' is pretty opaque, in solving their simple
question on `how do I change my password?'.]

  (Bring in a sick chassis and related parts, and it may well go
  home functional!)

3. Finally, and such as we ever have a `formal' business part of the
meeting, it will follow the presentations.

  As always (both with the informal nature of the group's `management'
and the vaguries of the presenters' schedules), the agenda and
content are subject to change.

MEETING SITE:
=============
This month's meeting will be held at:

        TEAM America  (http://www.teamamerica.com)
        110 East Wilson Bridge Road
        Worthington, OH 43085
        (614) 848-3995

        The building is at US23 North and 270 off of
        East Wilson Bridge Road just around the first
        curve.

Parking is FREE !

.... The group has met on the LAST Wednesday or LAST Saturday of a month,
alternating by month to allow more folks to mesh their schedules with
COLUG's. Sites and dates also depend on facility availabity, with
common-sense relocation in the holiday season.

The webpage always has a link to a map to the upcoming meeting site.

Meeting Schedule
================

The NEXT meeting is scheduled on SATURDAY, 27 November 1999
13:00 to 15:00 local -- Location is up in the air -- we've
pretty well outgrown the kindly donated TeamAmerica site,
anthough we continue to 'shoe-horn' in until a suitable
replacement is found.

Subject: COMMERCIAL: Second public beta of Compaq C for Linux Alpha
Date: Tue, 19 Oct 1999 21:01:28 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

The public beta of the Compaq C Compiler for Linux Alpha has been
updated (due to technical problems the update happened approximately
21:00 GMT on 18 October, even though the text of the page says it
happened on 15 October).

The new kit fixes a number of problems from the first beta, and
installs properly on SuSE 6.1 as well as Red Hat 6.0 and 5.2
distributions. Installation on Debian 2.1 systems should also be
easier, although this is currently untested.

Comments from the first beta were very positive about the run-time
performance improvement produced by the compiler, with few problems
other than the installation's being too specific to Red Hat 5.2, which
should now be resolved.

Go to: http://www.compaq.com/linux and click on "Software" under
"Products" on the menu at the left side of the page for more
information and immediate access to the download files after accepting
the beta license terms and filling out a brief registration form.

For technical support and bug reports, please see:
 http://www.iol.unh.edu/linux/C/

For comments and inquiries about the beta test, please use
the feedback form available at the download pages.
