"Introduction to Data Communications for Linux Users" is now on-line at
http://www.cadvision.com/blanchas/linux
It is about 2/3s of the way transferred over from Pagemaker (aaagh!) and
currently consists of over 200 pages and 300 images. The final total should
be close to 350 pages and 500 images.
This is revision 2.00 of my book which covers everything about networking
and data communications except for Linux. You can consider it equivalent of
the Net+ course or the network essentials of the MSCE and CNE
certifications. Topics covered are OSI Model, The Big Picture, ADSL, Wave
Modems, ISDN, Frame relay, X.25, modems, modulation, telephony, FDM, TDM,
STDM, QAM, FDSK, AM, FM, RS-232, Xon/Xoff, null modems, asynchronous and
synchronous communications, line encoding, ethernet, token ring, NICs, PC
hardware, repeaters, hubs, bridges, routers, brouters, gateways, TCP/IP,
packet sniffing, etc...
It's taken 6 years to write and was written based on course material and
research required for programs that I taught at the Southern Alberta
Institute of Technology. Any publishers out there interested in publishing
this?

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
A new OpenSource project, the Linux Terminal Server Project,
LTSP at http://www.ltsp.org, extends the power and flexibility of
Linux by making it easier and less expensive to deploy Linux
workstations on every desk.
SIMPLICITY !
Each workstation contains a network interface card with a bootrom

this makes a great platform for running all of your favorite Linux
programs, including: Gimp, Gnome, KDE, Netscape, Applixware,
StarOffice, telnet, tn5250, email and many others.
MANAGEABILITY !
The mission of the Linux Terminal Server project is to create the
configuration and management tools for simplifying the deployment
of diskless Linux workstations.
AVAILABILITY !
We are happy to announce the immediate availability of version 1.0
of the Linux Terminal Server package. This will allow you to get
your workstations up and running in a very short time.
Checkout our web site at: http://www.ltsp.org for more information.

structure or union type.
Any or all of these comments can be present in suitable places in the
source code.
The cross referencing is performed for the following items
Files - The files that the current file is included in
(even when included via other files).

KPlot - User friendly plotting for KDE
Along with the usual UI widgets, KDE/Qt provides classes for drawing
to the screen and printer and exporting data to files of various image
types.
This seems like a great environment for creating a user-friendly plotting
program. The important features are
Point-and-click plot editing - UNIX/X plotting is still in the
dark ages when it comes to user-friendliness. I'd prefer to set options
with dialog boxes rather than long text commands (as with gnuplot, for
example. The new Matlab does this a little bit, but not very well IMHO
and Matlab is not free.)
Publication quality plotting - Plots should look good enough to
go into journals.
WYSIWYG display - So that plots look the same on the screen or
printer. I haven't seen this happen in any plotting program yet,
although Mathematica tries.
Responsive GUI - Loading/plotting large data sets can take
time. The GUI shouldn't freeze. This is disconcerting to the user
and doesn't give him/her the option of stopping an unexpectedly long
operation.
I've started work on a 2D plotting widget called KPlotW and a
wrapper application which provides a system for communicating data
sets via shared memory for speed (and eventually sockets for remote
display) as well as access to KPlotW's features.
Eventually it would be nice to to expand the project. I have some ideas:
Include 3D plotting using Mesa (a free OpenGL implementation)
Build an interface for RLab, a matrix-manipulation language like Matlab
Build a simple plotting tool providing gnuplot-level services, but
in a much friendlier way ;)
Allow access from scripts, Perl, etc.
Create high-quality plots with no UI for use on Web pages
Create an application to plot data in real-time
(incrementally) (thanks to Samuel Kvasnica for this idea)
There's a lot of very good GPL code which could be adapted to makes
these things happen quickly. It you'd like to help, please visit
