Subject: real time linux workshop
Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 22:56:43 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hi all,
Linux has become a powerful operating system challenging the
OS and computer market, because it is open source and adaptable
to different hardware and computing problems. In particular,
there are some groups spread over the world developing some
modifications to the linux kernel in order to provide a hard
real time operation system, e.g. the NMT real time linux, the
RTAI variant, KURT etc. Since IMHO
1. developpers know one each other just by email,
2. there is also a growing demand for real time
operating systems for different platforms,
3. there is a threat that the separation in different
variants can introduce a negative feedback in the
real time linux development loop because of the lack
of a unified application interface,
a Workshop could yield the following benefits:
1. Bring together the developers, because there are
more channels of human communication in a conversation.
2. Presentation the different versions of real time linux,
NMT rt-linux, RTAI rt-linux to a general audience of
researchers, developers and industrial companies.
3. Profound discussion on the possibility of a unified
approach involving mainly NMT and RTAI people.
4. Discussion on a general application interface for a
real time linux version being independend on the
hardware platform it is ported to, e.g AlphaAXP.
5. Agreement on a unified approach for different computer
hardware, even embedded systems.
And that's why we propose:
Real Time Linux Workshop
A real time linux meeting in real time and on a real place.
http://www.thinkingnerds.com/projects/rtl-ws/rtl-ws.html
December (unsigned int N). 1999
Institut for Machine and Process Automation,
Vienna University of Technology,
Guszhausstr. 27-29, 1040 Vienna, Austria
The date is not fixed yet (apart from the type), but since
development is very fast in Linux, December should be possible.
We would really be glad, if there is a positive echo from
this group, especially from the NMT and the RTAI group, and
from anywhere else,
Nicholas McGuire

Subject: xzgv 0.1 - picture viewer for X with thumbnail-based file selector
Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 22:34:53 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
[I (Russell Marks) don't have net access, but Steven has been kind
enough to upload/post on my behalf.]
xzgv 0.1's been uploaded to metalab.unc.edu. It's a picture viewer for
X, with a thumbnail-based file selector. It uses GTK+ and Imlib. Most
file formats are supported, and the thumbnails used are compatible
with xv, zgv, and the Gimp. It can also be used with `xzgv file(s)',
to effectively bypass the file selector.
xzgv differs from other picture viewers for X in that it uses one
window for both the file selector and viewer, it (unlike xv) allows
both scrolling and fit-to-window methods of viewing large pictures,
and it (unlike xv and some others) doesn't ever mangle the picture's
aspect ratio.
It also provides extensive keyboard support; if you prefer using the
keyboard, this is almost certainly the best viewer for you. But it
doesn't skimp on the mousey stuff, either.
So anyway, it's just terribly great. :-)
Here's the LSM entry:
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Begin3
Title: xzgv
Version: 0.1
Entered-date: 19AUG99
Description: xzgv is a GTK+/Imlib-based picture viewer for X, which
supports most popular image formats. It provides a
thumbnail-based file selector, and allows panning and
fit-to-window methods of viewing.
xzgv is more a rewrite of zgv than a port as such, but
those familiar with zgv should see more than a passing
resemblance. And while it's mouse-friendly, it can
also be used entirely from the keyboard. :-)
This is an early version, and it can't do all that zgv
can yet. It's also less efficient than zgv. It's turned
out pretty well so far though, and so here it is. Bug
reports welcome. :-)

Subject: A new memory allocator
Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 22:38:17 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hi everybody,
during the last months I implemented a new memory-allocator
which now outperforms the standard allocator included in
glibc both in speed and memory effectiveness - at least
in all the cases that I have to deal with.
Current features:
- - Implemented as a C++ class which maps logical allocations
(as done via malloc()) to physical allocations (as done
via sbrk(), mmap() or alike).
One can easily instantiate the Allocator class to do
something beyond malloc(), such as managing the
memory on a graphics board or alike
- - Extremely little overhead for small allocated areas -
only 1 to 2 bit (not byte) plus the unavoidable
spoilage that is due to the alignment-restrictions
of the system.
- - Very fast, faster than glibc malloc, at least for all
cases that I could test and where it counts - when you
have to do a lot of allcations/frees. Of course, when
you only have to do very few allocations, the most
simple algorithm will probably be faster.
Unlike the malloc() implemented in glibc, there are
no severe "worst-case" scenarios, where you get
in performance trouble due to O(n) complexity linear
list searches... this was in fact the reason why
I started the project at all
- - Very well tested both with some random-malloc/free-generating
test functions and in big, complex, real-world server-software
that runs 24h a day - so it's unlikely there are still serious
bugs in it
Current drawbacks:
- - Much more complex than glibc's malloc() functions, using
height-balanced trees, hash-tables and alike - but hey,
programming has already been done, and the bytes that the
allocation code is longer shouldn't hurt these days...
- - While I use the allocator as a complete replacement for
the glibc builtin mechanisms, the "surrounding",
operating system dependent code is not complete and
could probably use some optimization as well.
For example, my minimal malloc()-replacement functions
(which then use the Allocator class to manage the memory)
are currently not thread-safe, and currently use sbrk() only
- - As a contribution to the public, there should be a little
more documentation.
It has always been my intention to publish the allocator under
the "GNU Lesser General Public License", but I've got very
little spare-time, so I'd like to know if
- - anyone is really interested in such code - it's probably
most interesting for complex C++ software or things
like a Java Virtual Machine implementation
- - anyone can help in creating the "surrounding" code,
implementing things like thread-support or mmap()
support.
If you think you have enough time, interest and knowledge
to make this new allocator a valuable contribution to the
open source community, please write me an email.
Regards,
Peter Niemayer

For the past few months, I've been quietly developing a new linux forums
site - linuxfool.com which I ultimately hope will become a one-stop resource
for linux users. It is currently just forums, however I intend to implement
various information sources, such as jobs postings for Linux folks, news,
and downloads / software section.
I would love to have folks take a look at the site, and tell me what they
think of the current format. If you have a linux site and would like to
swap links, I would love to! I am also looking for folks to help out w/ the
site, to provide CGI scripts and utilities, as well as information sources.
If you have a high-traffic site and would be willing to provide either a
link, some banner impressions or news coverage, please contact me, I would
love to talk to you.
I believe this site will be an invaluable resource for Linux users. Please
visit it, and let me know what you think. Start posting, you never know
what kinds of contacts you will make through the forum. I hope to have one
of the developers of GNUPG to make a few posts shortly, and I certainly hope
other developers will come along.
If you run a linux site and would like a forum to discuss your product or
site or whatnot, please contact me, I would be more than happy to help you
out.
Best regards, and my apologies for the intrusion, I sincerely hope I didn't
offend anyone.

Formication is a form processor which can send custom-formatted email,
save form data to custom-formatted files, and reply to the user with
