Subject: Flight Gear Version 0.6.1 released
Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 19:41:38 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Flight Gear version 0.6.1 is now available.
USA Scenery version 0.3 is now available.

The Flight Gear Flight Simulator project is a free, open-source,
multi-platform flight sim development project. Source code for the
entire project is available and licensed under the GPL.

For more information, please visit the Flight Gear web page at:

    http://www.flightgear.org

Version 0.6.1 is mainly a bug fix release aimed at stabalizing the
0.6.x code branch. A 0.7.x code branch has been created for all new
development.

New in USA Scenery version 0.3
* Added urban areas.
* Many problems introduced by slivers have been resolved by
  identifying and eliminating polygon slivers.

New in Source version 0.6.1
* More MacOS portability fixes.
* More Borland C++ fixes.
* More IRIX fixes.
* Fixed a bug in handling windows drive letter, colon "C:" notation.
* Minor tweaks to the Astro sub section contributed by Durk Talsma.
* GUI updates contributed by Norman Vine.
* Fixed a problem with ambiguous constructors in the fgText class.
* Updates to JSBsim contributed by Jon Berndt.
* Created a tile load queue so that we only load one tile per frame.
This isn't entirely satisfactory, but it replaces the one big
pause when crossing a tile boundary with several shorter pauses.
* Fixed bug with passing PUI keystrokes on to glut.
* Fixed a bug in tilecache size which caused occasional tiles to drop
out when more than one row is scheduled "simultaneously".
* Changes to scenery building tools to handle sliver detection and
  resolution.
* Fixed several other minor bugs in the scenery creation tools.
* Added urban area support to scenery creation tools.
* Made the parallel scenery building tools a bit more robust if a
requested client machine happens to be offline by pinging it first
to see if it is alive.
* Added support for libgpc's new hole tracking interface.
* Tony Peden contributed a c172 flight model replacement for the
Navion. Still needs to be debugged a bit before it is usable.

Curt.

The Alice Springs Linux User Group will be showing Linux off at the
1999 Annual Alice Springs Show on July 2nd and 3rd.

OK, so we're not as big as Atlanta, but we're going to have our own
Linux Showcase Oz style ;-)
The ASLUG booth will boast a network of Linux PCs running tasks such as
web serving, file serving (SAMBA), workgroup collaboration (StarOffice),
amazing graphics, games (Quake, Civilization CTP), KDE, GNOME etc etc.

The only things you won't be able to see are random system lock-ups,
crashes and the "Blue Screen of Death"!

If you're passing through central Australia at this time, drop in and
say G'day!

For information on Alice Springs, see www.alicesprings.nt.gov.au

Subject: Festival Speech Synthesis System 1.4.0
Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 19:27:21 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

The Festival Speech Synthesis System version 1.4.0
and Edinburgh Speech Tools Library version 1.2.0
                            20th June 1999

Festival offers a general framework for building speech synthesis
systems as well as including examples of various modules. As a whole
it offers full text to speech through a number APIs: from shell level,
though a Scheme command interpreter, as a C++ library, from Java, and
an Emacs interface. Festival is multi-lingual (currently English
(British and American), and Spanish) though English is the most
advanced. Other groups release new languages for the system.

The system is written in C++ and uses the Edinburgh Speech Tools
Library for low level architecture and has a Scheme (SIOD) based
command interpreter for control. Documentation is given in the FSF
texinfo format which can generate, a printed manual, info files and
HTML.

- From this version, the system is now free software and is distributed
under an X11-type licence allowing unrestricted commercial and
non-commercial use alike.

This distribution includes:
   * Full English (British and American English) text to speech
   * Full C++ source for modules, SIOD interpreter, and Scheme library
   * Lexicon based on CMULEX and OALD (OALD is restricted to non-commercial
     use only)
   * Edinburgh Speech Tools, low level C++ library
   * British English Male (for residual LPC resynthesis 8k and 16k versions)
   * 2 American English Male (for residual LPC resynthesis 8k and 16k versions)
   * 4 other voices using MBROLA based diphone synthesis (1 British Male,
2 American Males and 1 American Female).
   * Castilian Spanish Male (for residual LPC resynthesis 11k version)
   * British English Male (for spike excited LPC resynthesis 10k version)
   * Full documentation (html, postscript and GNU info format)

Festival version 1.4.0 sources, voices, and Linux binaries are
available from
    http://www.cstr.ed.ac.uk/projects/festival/download.html
and also from the US mirror at CMU
    http://www.speech.cs.cmu.edu/festival/download.html

The Festival home page, offering descriptions of the system, examples
and online demos, can be found at
    http://www.cstr.ed.ac.uk/projects/festival.html

Requirements

To run Festival you need:
   * A Unix machine, Festival has compiled and run on Suns (SunOS and
Solaris), FreeBSD, Linux, SGIs and DEC Alphas but should be portable
     to any standard Unix machine.
   * A C++ compiler: we have used GCC  version 2.7.2, 2.8.1
SunCC 4.1 nd 4.2, and egcs. Other C++ compilers are
probably possible with perhaps some minor chanages
   * GNU Make any recent version
   * Audio hardware, /dev/audio (8 bit and 16 bit on Suns, Linux
and FreeBSD) and NCD's NAS network transparent audio system
are supported directly but Festival supports the execution of
any Unix command that can play audio files.

There is also support for building the system under Windows NT and
95/98. We have successfully ran the system complied with Cygnus' GNU
win32 package and Microsoft's Visual C++, instructions are included

We intend to distribute binary distributions for major
architectures particularly Linux and Solaris. We will *not*
distribute binary versions for Windows NT/95 as we do not have enough
expertise to support them.

New in 1.4.0 version
   * The copyright has changed. The system is now free.
   * Substantial low level tidy-ups in the Utterance structure
     * Stronger notion of Relation types (lists, trees, mls, and others)
     * XML i/o for relations (good for trees and more complex data exchange)
   * Three new US English voices (simply front ends to MBROLA voices)
   * Features values can now be anything including Features and
other objects can be cleanly added.
   * SIOD is now "in one directory" rather than one defun
It can also be used standalone, and adding user objects is easier and
     consistent
   * New documentation system for Speech Tools, integrating code,
descriptions and examples (DOC++, Jade, docbook based)
   * Generalization of models (WFSTs, Ngrams, CART, viterbi)
     allowing arbitrary use from Scheme.
   * Initial JSAPI (and JSML) support, stadardising the existing Java
     interface.
   * "Building Voices in Festival" document describing process of building
     new voices in the system
       http://www.cstr.ed.ac.uk/projects/festival/docs/festvox
   * Many other fixes

Dear All,

For some reason, which I cannot explain, the Linux newgroups were left
off the circulation list for this press release I sent out last week.

I am posting it now, for those who do not reguarly browse web sites like

===================================================================

TITLE: GBdirect Release Free Linux Training Materials

RELEASE DATE: 14th June, 1999
EMBARGOED UNTIL: 0.01 am, 15th June, 1999

FROM: GBdirect
        27 Park Drive
        Bradford, BD9 4DS
        tel: 01274 772277
        linux@gbdirect.co.uk
        http://www.linuxtraining.co.uk

GBdirect, Europe's leading provider of Linux training, today announced
the release of free Linux training materials. Lecture notes for the
first four modules of their ``Linux Systems'' training course are now
available on the web (initially at www.gbdirect.co.uk/linuxtraining,
later at www.linuxtraining.co.uk). They cover:

1. An Overview of a Linux System
2. The Linux Filesystem
3. The Linux Command Line Interface
4. Basic Linux Tools

Each module consists of 20-25 pages of bullet-pointed lecture notes
followed by graduated exercises. Experienced commercial instructors
should be able to deliver the lecture notes in about 1 hour, leaving
between 1 and 2 hours for practical work based on the exercises. In
addition to good teaching skills, the users of these materials are
expected to have sound knowledge of the Linux and UNIX operating
systems.

In the interests of good citizenship, the modules are distributed in
low-bandwidth, open-source, formats.

GBdirect's primary motivation for releasing thse notes as open source
software is to ensure their widest possible dissemination. A
secondary motivation is the company's desire to `give something back'
to the community which provides them with virtually all of their
office software.

The company hope that others will contribute to the Linux Training
Materials Project, by authoring their own lecture notes or by
modifying those which GBdirect have contributed. To encourage such
participation, GBdirect are releasing their materials under an open
source licence derived from the Linux Documentation Project. This
allows end-users to copy and distribute the lecture notes as the
please, but protects the copyrights of their original authors.

For further details contact GBdirect at the above addresses, or ring
Dave Fisher on 01274 772277
