see, no more caps!!
some words on gender specific language in the toast song and bylaws:
the toast song is a symbol. organizations and societies depend upon their
symbols for direction. therefore, changes to it should be very carefully
considered. on the other hand, by-laws are merely operating rules and
guidelines. there should be no gender-specific language unless, for one
reason or another, the language, by intent, only applies to one gender. lets
make the change.
as far as the toast song controversy goes, the main argument for keeping it
is tradition. now, on paper at least, traditions exist because the course of
history has determined that they benefit the organization. however, time
marches on, and the extent to which a tradition continues to be beneficial
waxes and wanes. my personal belief is that we need to make some change to
the toast song to be more inclusive, as (estimated) half of our brothers are
not "men of.." apo. however, the alternatives proposed to date ("true to"
and others praising diversity) are, in my opinion, either aesthetically ugly
or do not capture the essence of apo. i therefore hope that we can continue
the search and be creative and find some resolution. i would really like to
put this issue to bed, because, while i think it is important, it is
receiving a disproportionate share of attention, relative to other issues we
face.
