Here at Kappa Chapter (Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA),
our advisors are pretty important. Here are some of the things they
do:
1) advise the elections committee
2) oversee any pledge pranks - to prevent real harm from being done
3) if two brothers are having some sort of disagreement that the
officers can't handle, an advisor is good for being unbiased. Example
- if cliques were to form and cause the chapter to become split,
advisors would come in and help to patch things up.
4) advisors are always around when you need them. The Chairman of the
Advisory Committee is usually one of our check signers so that if
emergency funds are needed, the check can be written without
sacrificing any security.
5) advisors have cars and jobs - they don't have classes or depend on
the bus. Mostly.
6) advisors have seen it all before, and have a different perspective
on problems.
7) advisors provide someone big, important, and official in cases
where undergraduate brothers run into a problem they can't handle.
Example: our chapter experienced problems with the athletic
department, and it looked like a rough time for whoever went to talk
to the head officials in charge - except that we have advisors who are
used to this sort of tough talk and know how to deal with it.

Just some thoughts ...
