I have thought a lot about this idea of having brothers pledge hours,
especially since it has been discussed by brothers from my chapter. The one
place where we have problems with this is our Book Exchange. This goes on for 2
weeks at the beginning of each semester, and each brother is required to get 5
hours per week (if they have active status). If you do not get your 5 hours
each week, you get a $2 fine for each week that you don't get the required
hours. Also, if you don't get your 10 total hours, you get another fine. So it
is possible to be fined $6 for this one project.

Now, this is where most brothers have a problem getting their hours. There are
enough projects throughout the semester to get the required 30 hours, it's just
really hard to get 10 hours as soon as you get up to school with having to
unpack, buy books (which can be an incredibly long process with the lines we
have), get situated in general, etc. So if we were to allow brothers to pledge
hours that they want to do (in an attempt to keep brothers from going active or
restrictive) but still require certain hours for the Book Exchange, it would be
self-defeating. If we are going to allow hour pledges, then we should allow
complete hour pledges.

I know that, personally, I had to go restrictive this semester because I have 8
classes (all 300 and 400 level) and have no time to make all the meetings and
get 30 hours. I only got 30 minutes at the Book Exchange this semester. If I
had had the option of pledging hours for the semester, I could have managed 10
or so total. But if I were told that I could pledge these hours but I still had
to get 10 hours at the Book Exchange, I'd tell them to forget it.

Another problem I just thought of now is that the BE starts before we have any
general brotherhood meeting. There would be no way for a brother to pledge
hours for the BE and have it approved by the chapter beforehand. We usually
don't have a meeting until after the first week of the BE. Just a thought that
occured to me.

Anyways, I think that this could have it's possibilities but I also think that
it would need a lot of work. Val and Tom, maybe we should get together some
time and try to work some stuff out and take it to the service committee :)
