Brothers and others,
My chapter here at Michigan Tech does not require any amount of service
hours for the active members. We are very proud of this fact.
I offer two solutions to the problem of lack of participation:

1. Reduce the service program for the amount of people who want to
                put in the time.

2. Reward those who do put in the time to do Leadership, Friendship, and
Service.i (a mere "thank you" does wonders)

I have always opt for the second and try to make it worthwhile to
be an active. I hope no one is discouraged when people go inactive due to
school. This is the main reason why we are in college, not APO. I have found
that punishing others for lack of service only discourages them and others to
do more.
What would make it worthwhile to be a active member? I think that
varies very widely from chapter to chapter. You may want to ask your own
members why they pledged and/or what they hope to get out of APO now that
they've been in for as long as they have.
I hope this helps you all. These are my own opinions (and my roommate)
and may not be those of my chapter.

                                        In Brotherhood,

                                        Matthew R. Wilson
