According to the National By-laws the '96 must be in the western Convention
region: New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and all states west of there.
Denver can't have it again, becuase they had it in '88
Most of the following is opinion:
While you don't have to have a chapter in the same Metro area as the Convention
site, it makes things a lot easier to plan. Large cities tend to be preferred
because they have hotels that can handle 1500 students. (Nationals in the
west have fewer attendees due to distance) With those limitations, I think the
following cities are possibilities:
Los Angeles
San Francisco
San Diego
Seattle
Phoenix
Portland
Albequerque (sp?)
Of these Portland and Albequerque are relatively small cities and have 1 or
2 respectively colleges nearby. Phoenix is larger, but only has 1 college
nearby. U of Washington is newly reactivated and seems to be more interested
in extension, which is probably the best thing for that area.
This leaves us with just the 3 California cities which are likely to submit
bids. Distance to all of them is about equal, so that is no longer a factor.
San Diego's chapters are relatively new, which doesn't help. (LA had it in '80)
The part of Section 4 in California (Northern half of California) has
10 chapters (All of Region X has 21). If most of them got behind the bid,
it would probably even beat LA in a Region X internal vote.
My predictions: 2 or 3 proposals, SFO, LA and maybe San Diego. San Francisco
will have more chapter support, Los Angeles has the Weather advantage.
The Winner: Hello Golden Gate Bridge.
