Brothers,
I have read the current thread about service hour requirements, to
keep full membership "perks," with a great deal of interest.

Alpha Phi Omega is an interesting organization in that they actually
care enough to go into a community, city, state and do service unselfishly to
others. I don't think it matters how you log the hours, rather we should
focus on what was done, how productive it was, and how the project worked
out to begin with. IMHO we worry too much about documenting the stuff and
not enough looking at the result for what it is.

Placing requirements on members to do a certian amount of service is
principly against the concept of a volunteer organization (fraternity).
However, it is used to keep resume hunters out of the works - wanting only
to be a member so it will make them look good. I think there are better ways
to do this. And, holding an office looks better on a resume than just an
average member too.

Also, we need to realize that people have a life outside of the
hallowed walls of Alpha Phi Omega. They have their own problems, constraints
and conflicts. The fraternity cannot be self sufficient unless the people
who are members are still in school, mentally competant (sp?), and able
to function. For example, this semester, I'm not going to be active in the
chapter here. Personal and scholastic interests are taking a higher priority
(like getting a life, and graduating before the year 2000.)

Keep everything in perspective. Realize that tthe amount of service
an individual does is insignificant, rather the true measure of this devotion
should be the service of the entire fraternity.
