In message (no message ID) you write:
=>- "I'm taking 48 credits and I don't have time to go to service projects."
Well, if someone in our chapter is going to have a rough semester,
they go "associate". Basically they get most of the same deal as
actives, they still have to pay dues, they only have to get 10 hours
during the semester, they have to go to one pledge meeting instead of
interviewing every pledge.
=>- "I've got a 10am class on Monday morning, and I have to get to sleep early
=> on Sunday night, so I can't make a 7pm Brotherhood meeting."
I have a 9am class this semester, had 8's last one, and that never
caused a problem. Our meetings are 6pm monday and they are usually
over around 8. Brothers meetings are where you find out about
projects, fellowship events, etc. We need to have quorum for any
voting business to take place, so it is very important to both
brothers and the chapter for brothers to go to every meeting.
(actives are allowed to miss 3 unexcused, or any number for a valid
reason, such as a monday class).
=>- "I'm an officer, and the duties on my office keep me so busy I can't go
=> to service projects."
It is VERY important for the exec board members to go to meetings.
How on earth can they keep in touch with the fraternity if they can't
make time for the basic meetings. I guess the worst as far as
meetings go is probably pledgemaster here. Monday brothers meetings,
wednesday pledge meetings, and sunday exec board meetings. All of the
officers know that it is alot of work, but that is part of the
position.
=>EZ _does_ have lots of projects (2 or 3 a week) as well as a year-round book
=>exchange and a lost and found; however, these seem to be kept running by
=>a core group in the chapter--there are other brothers who are "active" who
=>do nothing for the service program.
We have a decent service program too and the service hour requirement
is on way to help people stay focused on what they pledged for. For a
good part of the brotherhood, the hour requirement is not a problem,
and I think that it does help. If someone really can't or doesn't
want to do service for a semester (or for the rest of their time at
Tech), they can always go suspended. That does not banish people from
the fraternity in any way, just takes away voting privilages, etc.
=>Not to say that we worry too much about this situation. There are, however,
=>a few of us who feel that the chapter could benefit from some "required"
=>service on the part of the Brothers.
Yes, it is important to make sure that people are in the chapter for
the right reasons and sometimes the requirements can be a little bit
of a 'kick' that some people might need.
