Hi! My name is Riz, I go to the University Of Pennsylvania....
and I'm _not_ an officer this semester <big grin...load
off shoulders etc etc>. After two years of "being responsible",
I'm taking some time to do other activities. Mostly, I'll be
working on Circle K stuff as Lt Governor. But I am getting
flown down to NC by SCALE for a Literacy Training summit...should
be fun. :)
I wanted to share something with everyone though. This year,
we implemented community service as a component of New Student
Orientation. We are using the "Into The Streets" model. At current
time, 1500 of our freshmen have signed up to participate out of
2400 freshmen. All first year house RAs and managers are serving
as team leaders.
Funding was provided by the University Life and Presidents Office.
12 interns worked 10/hrs per week over the summer to set up the
sites and activities. I will provide information to anyone who
asks for it.
Chapters might want to consider doing something like this on a smaller
scale to get students involved in community service.
COOL (campus outreach opportunity league) does a real great job in
their Into The Streets manual explaining everything you need to do
to run an event on this scale. Besides the servcie component, think
of the excellent exposure your chapter would get from this project....
"Streets" doesn't actually happen til Sept 11th so I'll mail
an update after it's over on how it turns out....
It's incredilble how's it's mushrooming in just the 3 short years
since we've been doing it. 1st year - one hall and 160 students participated
2nd year 4 halls, 1 grad group and 340 students, 3rd year - looking
at 1500 and my jaw is still hanging open...
