Just so rumors and speculations don't start flying around on the list,
I'm going to post the facts as I know them.
During a chapter reactivation in Section 92 (sorry but I forget which
chapter) there was some confusion about which chapter was supposed to
bring which materials. Warren became a little upset because he thought
that one of the sponsoring chapters was bringing all of the materials
when in reality the two chapters were supplying different materials.
During Warren's (heated) discussion with chapter 'A', one of the brothers
came up to Warren and told him to 'Chill Out' (this brother was from
California and honest to goodness talked like that) and Warren took it
the wrong way. He grabbed this kid by the tie and shook him around for
a bit and yelled. Noone threw any punches or anything- just basically
a lot of yelling.
Anyway, after the ceremony (the petitioners didn't see any of this)
the members of chapter A approached Warren and said that they were
going to report to Nationals. Soon our national president started
an investigation. Warren, in the meantime, knew that he did a stupid
thing. A meeting was held between himself and Chapter A and most
grievences were worked out. Unfortunately the brother from California
wasn't at that meeting. Warren had sent him an apology letter, but
this brother didn't think that the content of the letter said enough
for him to believe that he was sorry.
At one point Jerry met with Warren for dinner and asked him to resign.
Warren didn't choose to honor that request at that time. Warren had
consulted with various peers and members of his staff and they all
agreed that this, while stupid, was not an offense worthy of resigning.
Jerry then choose to take it up with the board.
At their meeting in July (the same weekend as my wedding I might ad)
the board wanted to take action against Warren- wanted to acknowledge
that that type of action has no place in APhiO. They would have preferred
having some sort of 'official warning' or reprimand. The National
ByLaws, as they stand now, do not provide the board with the power to do
reprimand a Regional Director. So an official action was taken by the
board asking him to resign. There was no other action the board could take
even though most of the board agreed that this was not an official action.
Warren's origional thinking on the matter is that he was not responsible
to the national board- but to the chapters in Region II. He therefore
was going to wait until the Regional elections in December to see what
the brothers of the Region would want to do- then to honor that decision.
Then he was thinking that he was going to resign just to avoid the trouble
this would cause. He had said that if he resigns, he would not only
resign his Regional Directorship (as the board had directed) but also
his life membership on the Board.
The Sectional Chairs in Region II met on a teleconference and out thinking
was that Warren should not resign, but we would make a point of bringing
this up at elections in December and we would all write to our chapters
to explain the situation.
Warren, the last I heard, was not sure what he was going to do. He is
currently out of the country on business for a couple of weeks and I
think he'll come to his decision upon his return.
Now you know the facts. I will be happy to discuss this with anyone
in greater detail via private e-mail. Just drop me a note or give me
a call.
