After looking at some more sites including ritual phrases, I'd like to use a
precedent to allow some of them. Some were on Yahoo! group lists' archives.
These groups are intended only for APO members, but technically open to all.
Here, I think the "good faith" clause applies, or at least trust or
predicting rational human behavior. If a nonBrother/Sister (gotta include
those PHILs) wanted to join an APO Yahoo! group, s/he could, but how likely
is this? More junk to go through, more mailbox-clogging e-mail.

I don't think APO list member prospects are checked (moderators, a little
help, please?), HOWEVER, I know that on my OA lodge's mailing list, we are
not to discuss any ritual higher than the first level, but this isn't an
issue in APO. This list has memberships cross-checked, & we trust each
other not to send rituals to nonBrothers (OA that is). To date, no actual
ritual stuff hasbeen discussed on it to my current knowledge anyway (I've
been on it since the end of 4/01).

I am in the Sons of the American Revolution as well. We have no rituals
that are to be kept within the membership, BUT our membership is checked,
even though technically you could request that a computer put you on.
Nonmembers may be discovered, especially if they post nonrelevant material.
I guess this is why they check membership. On some genealogy lists, I've
gotten spam from list members.

My suggestion, therefore, is to include membership or other
membership-required list/group membership verification on lists & groups.
As for the rest of the Web, I use another OA example. We use passwords from
our rituals in ritual packets online (PDF). They can be circumvented, but
then trust/good faith comes in.

We could password-protect this stuff, or just assume only members will
search for the info (& if pledges or petitioners need to see the info, there
is a price either way- to alter it or allow hem to see ritual stuff...but
they in many cases wouldn't know it was from the ritual).
