I agree with Mark on this. In Section 74, there have been cases where a
Chapter made a Brother an advisor right after they graduated, only to
realize that the Brother needed some time away before trying to advise =
the
Chapter. The previous Section Chairs and I have continuously =
recommended to
the Chapters to wait at least 1 year (after leaving active status as a
graduate) before making an alum an advisor to his/her home Chapter. If =
the
brother is from a different Chapter, the 1-year waiting period could be
overlooked since the new Brother does not carry any active baggage into =
the
new Chapter -- however, I would still ask Chapters to carefully consider
whom they make advisors.
=20
The other thing relating to advisors that some Chapters don't fully =
realize
is that in making a Brother an advisor, if they are not from that =
Chapter
originally, then they become a Brother of the new Chapter by virtue of
Advisory Membership. When the Chapter decides not to have said Brother =
as
an advisor or said Brother steps down, that Brother is now an alumni =
member
of that Chapter.

While I don't believe that there is any requirement that prevents recent
graduates from becoming advisors. I would caution against doing it too =
soon.
The role of an advisor is very different from that of and active.
Generally, They don't get as embroiled in the day to day debates and
politics of a chapter. They are there to ADVISE the chapter. This =
generally
means helping when it is asked for and stepping in on the occasion when
things may get out of hand or a mediator is needed.
=20
This brings me to a second point. Advisors need to remain impartial both =
in
fact and appearance. This is often difficult for a new graduate because =
he
or she may find themselves having to choose between friends or possibly =
even
having to admit that the stance that they once advocated was incorrect =
then
and remains so now. Or that it was OK then, but has since changed. None =
of
this is easy and takes a certain amount of "removal".
=20
Now, I am by no means advocating that these brothers no longer be =
involved
with the chapter. There are many valuable ways that they can continue =
there
involvement. They should continue to support service projects. They =
could
certainly attend meetings. Although I would suggest that they "practice" =
a
more advisory stance by not chirping in on all issues and possibly =
sitting
in the back of the room to allow the actives to sit closer to the front =
and
conduct business.=20
=20
There is no reason why they can't lead projects. Again, the chapter =
should
not rely on them for their service program, or any other program for =
that
matter. At this point they should be viewed more as resources for ideas =
and
suggestions, rather than in the thick of the debates.
=20
Well, Those are my suggestions. But remember above all that you have to =
find
what works for you. This organization allows each chapter to operate as =
it
chooses. With only some general guidelines and requirements that are not
nearly as tough as many other organizations. This can be both a blessing =
and
a curse. Which way it turns out is up to the chapter.
=20
Best wishes and good luck.

Brothers--
I'm trying to find this info on the national website but can't. The =
chapter
I work with is having questions about advisors. I understand that four =
are
needed. What is the breakdown: I recall that there needs to be faculty,
scouting, etc. Also, is there a national bylaw or policy on "time away" =

a brother who graduates and wishes to advise the chapter they pledged? =
(I
know it was a year at my chapter but that may differ elsewhere.) If =
