Always be sure with outdoor locations to have a backup location
planned/reserved....the school I pledged at had these gorgeous gardens
and every time we attempted to do a fall pledging or spring activation
there, it rained. (fortunately we had a backup.) My pledging ceremony
was held in our outdoor ampitheatre, which is in this area of camus that
most people don't know about, so it was rather secluded. I think
pledge ceremonies outdoors are a much safer bet when the issue of
secrecy is concerned....since anyone can pledge, if a pledge ceremony is
accidentally overheard by someone, it is not as big an issue as an
initiation being overheard. (although neither should happen)

A Chapter I advise has the electric candles that have switches on them,
making the process a little easier. The room they use for pledge
inductions is in a 200-year-old building, so lit candles are not
allowed.

=20

While we are on the subject, what is everyone=12s opinion of outdoor
ceremonies? I know of a few Chapters that hold outdoor pledging and
activation ceremonies (they are held in quiet areas with limited
exposure to nonmembers).

My Chapter uses electric candles (like those holiday ones that are
plastic with replaceable bulbs). Everything gets plugged in, but the
bulbs are slightly unscrewed at the start, and when needed, you simply
turn the bulb on when ready.

Has anyone been busted for holding an APO ceremony indoors? I know at
the
University of Delaware, technically, it is not legal to store candles in
a
dorm room nor have an open flame without permission on property or maybe
just indoors. My chapter's restarting president's sister was punished
for
havin a ball of wax without a wick in her room! Suggestions for getting
around this while maintaining the spirit of obedience & also respect for
the
law as we should in APO?
