I am sad to report that Fr. Joe Durkin passed away in his sleep on Saturday
night, May 31st. It was an
honor to attend his 100th birthday mass and dinner just a few weeks ago.
His obituary will appear in The Washington Post on
Tuesday, June 3rd.

I would like to share with you an article that appeared in the most
recent edition of "The Hoya." It is about the oldest living Brother of
Mu Alpha Chapter, Fr. Joseph T. Durkin. Fr. Durkin's 100th birthday was
recently celebrated at Georgetown University.
What the article does not discuss is Fr. Durkin's involvement in APO. He
is a Brother beloved in the bond of Mu Alpha. Initiated in Spring '82,
on Line 53, Fr. Durkin has been an inspiration to all of us by living a
life of service. He has served as a mentor to many of us. The Spring
2000 Line was dedicated to Fr. Durkin. (In general terms, he was the
pledge class namesake for the Spring 2000 initiates.)
On a personal level, I remember one time that the Capital Area Step Team
(now disbanded) was practicing on campus, and we noticed Fr. Durkin
walking by, alone. This was in 2001, so Father was around 98 or so. We
stopped what we were doing, and all six of us walked with Fr. Durkin to
make sure he got to his destination and back safely. He definitely is
familiar with the men and women of APO and recognizes the letters every
time he sees them. Any time we happen to see him on campus, we stop and
visit with him for a bit, because he always has something extraordinary
to share.
And from a historical perspective, Fr. Durkin has written a biography of
another beloved, and now deceased Mu Alpha Brother: Fr. Daniel Power,
who was a moderator (advisor) of APO, and is the namesake of the Power
Memorial endowments. (The Power Grants and Scholarships are awarded by
Mu Alpha Chapter to deserving undergraduate students.)
And on a final note, for those who are wondering, Fr. Durkin's nickname
given at initiation is "Emeritus." :-)
