I agree, Paul. And frankly the notion of a "poor college student" isn't
what it used to be. I think that the better term would be "financially
misguided." I wouldn't apply this to all college students, but I really
have a problem when someone tells me that they can't afford $20 to spend on
a worthwhile cause when I see them every week hitting the bars, movies, and
restaurants and spending far more than that on nothing. In fact, this past
week alone at Convention I saw literally hundreds of dollars spent on
entertainment.
I'm just as guilty as anyone else of using the excuse that I just don't have
the money, but I think that it's time we all started putting a little
perspective on things especially when we explain the financial issues of the
Fraternity to our students. Instead of just saying it costs $20 bucks to
pledge and another $35 to join, we could start suggesting that all it costs
is 2 or 3 movies and a few dinners out instead. Fiscal responsibility is as
much a part of leadership as anything else. I'm working on it too.
You asked a penny for my thoughts, I gave my two cents...now, where's my
change? =)

That may be true. However, I stand firm in my belief that pledging APO is
still FAR cheaper than pledging a Social Frat or Sorority.

Honestly I was dissapointed to see the pledge fee doubled. $15 was a much
better solution on the basis that rush week is not long and a lot of people
decide to pledge not really sure if they want to join or not, and $15 is not
a lot of money (my chapters's pledge fee has been $15 all along, the other 5
going to our operating costs.) that is not a lot of money for something
you are not quite sure you want to do or not (nor was 10). 20, however, to
a college student, is a lot to spend on something you do not know if you
want to do...i realize that is only $5 more, but to a poor college student,
5 is a lot. i think aamd's should have been what was raised and that the
pledge fee should have been left alone so that those unsure people could
still give APhiO a try.

I mean don't get me wrong, I don't want to have to fork over another 30
bucks or anything, but we've raised pledge fees and honorary membership fees
to help alleviate the fincances deficit, but It just seems to me that we, as
active brothers, should also shoulder some of the burden in helping bring
the National Fraternity out of the Red. And when you think about it 30
bucks is like 1 DVD, or two Magazine subscriptions or what have you. Its
really not that much ESPECIALLY over a 24 month period.
One major point of disappointment in the voting delegates.

Pledge fees and activation fees were both raised $10, for a total raise of
$20. No legislation to raise AAMD's had been submitted. A motion
presented on the floor to charge $15 per active brother was introduced,
but not passed. Honorary Membership fees were raised, IIRC, $25. Also -
the Finance Committee managed to present from before lunch to after dinner
that day, spanning two breaks. So yay to them.
