Greetings all!
Hope you all have had a great holiday! I know that many of you won't
read this until after the convention and maybe even until you get back to
school, but I wanted to take a few moments to send some greetings and my
thanks to all for your participation (or at least your faithful
readership). APO-L sprung from discussions at the 1986 National
Convention, and it's always nice to mark its continued existence and
activity at this time of year. In the near future, I'll try to publish a
few stats about traffic over the last semester (and even how much spam
we've blocked since making a few changes back in September).
For those of us not at the convention, let's hear a little chatter!
- What do you miss most about not being there?
- Did your chapter send a lot of delegates?
- Have you been to one before - what did you like best?
For my part, I miss seeing all of my friends and making new ones. I was
fortunate enough to go to every convention from 1984 through 1998, and
every convention led me to meet someone who has since remained a good
friend in APO. I especially miss my Region IX brothers, many of whom
I've not yet even met, as it's been a while since I've been to a Region
IX event.
Convention Memories... Working in the Fraternity store in 1986 with Bob
Barkhurst and Judy Mitchell was a real treat, and that was also the year
that Omicron managed to help arrange the first post-convention New Year's
Eve party in the president's suite, even though Earle Herbert had left
for home earlier in the day. I still miss Earle, and looking back I sure
wish he had been able to stay for the party!
Lastly, I remember the marathon legislative sessions - especially 1986,
but also many others. Whether being an observer in the gallery (sending
in a pizza to our chapter's voting delegates), or being a voting delegate
mylsef, there was always something surreal about being up at 3 in the
morning with several hundred brothers, debating the odds and ends of the
legislation before us.
For those of you at the convention, I hope your legislative sessions are
shorter but no less meaningful, and that the fellowship abounds. Special
hellos to Region IX, Omicron (Go Hawkeyes - Orange Bowl-bound!) and to my
former Board colleagues.
