All three of these variations of referring to Alpha Phi Omega are used,
quite commonly. The term "Ay-Phi-Que", is generally used by those at
Historically-Black Colleges & Universities (abbreviated as HBCU or
HBCUs). It is quite common among the National Panhellenic Council
fraternities & sororities (not necessarily only at HBCUs, but in other
NPHC fraternities on other campuses as well, to refer to the greek
letter Omega as, "Q". They do this so as to differentiate it from the
greek letter Omicron "O". I really wouldn't say that "Ay-Phi-Que" refers
to a so-called, "separatist movement" in the fraternity, if there even
is one. "Ay-Phi-Que" is merely the term for APO or APhiO commonly used
by African-Americans. However, to avoid the stereotype, not every
African-American brother of APO used that term. I have also seen several
petitioners in Section 83's newest Petitioning Group, at Virginia Union
University (a HBCU), refer to themselves as "Ay-Phi-Que." I would also
note that this particular petitioning group is also a very co-ed group.

As far as the "separatist group" that has been referred to, these
brothers generally call themselves, "Brothers of the Rising Sun." I
wouldn't necessarily call them as "separatist group", since I don't
believe their goal is to form a completely separate organization. They
do have some different views on how the fraternity should be structured,
which are not held by the majority of active brothers at this time (not
that there's anything wrong with having different views on how the
fraternity should be structured). But the way I see it, merely referring
to yourself and your fraternity as, "Ay-Phi-Que," does not automatically
say that you are calling yourself a, "Brother of the Rising Sun."

Subject: [APO-L] "A-Phi-Que", "APO", or "A-Phi-O"

Brothers
Prior messages have debated about the "seperatist" sentiment from some
chapters calling themselves "A-Phi-Que". Personally, I don't see it is
any different than using other various ways of saying Alpha Phi Omega.
Some chapters swear by "A P O", others by "A Phi O", and some by "A Phi
Que", and still others by "A P Q".
I pledged a chapter that always said "A Phi O". After I moved to New
York, i noticed that most, if not all, chapters used "A P O". I caught
myself using "A P O" alot more since I moved, however I am still known
to say "A Phi O" quite often.
No matter how you say it, we are still all Brothers in Alpha Phi Omega,
National Service Fraternity. I could never consider a Brother a
seperatist just because they use "A Phi Q" or "A P Q" or "A P O" or "A
Phi O" (or for any number of reasons for that matter).
Many chapters pride themselves on different things. And in a sense,
each chapter is a seperate piece of the whole, each with it's own unique
customs and traditions. Surely nobody is proposing that each chapter is
a "seperatist" because the Brothers are proud of their chapter.
I am very proud of both of the chapters that I am a part of. Each
iscompletely different. And each is unique. It is at conferences and
conventions that we can celebrate these differences and learn from each
other.
I understand completely how frustrating it is when someone judges you
and your chapter because of culture and traditions. And believe me, it
can be frustrating when other Brothers view you and your chapter as
abnormal. Sometimes Brothers can be downright nasty. (I am not
claiming anyone in this discussion has been nasty in any sense.) But,
isn't Alpha Phi Omega a collection of chapters that are different?
Just some thoughts
