Dear Brothers:
Although we are now in the final portion of our National Service Week
effort as we await Chapters to submit their project reports and exams,
papers, the holidays and Convention are looming on the horizon, it is
also time to start thinking about and begin planning a project for Alpha
Phi Omega's National Spring Service Day, April 11-13.
Each Chapter should have received a copy of the National Spring Service
Day handbook in the November mailing, which was prepared by co-chairs
Voltaire Villanueve and Keith and Jenn Rielage. We wanted to make sure
Chapters had plenty of time to plan this effort.
The 2000 National Convention created this event in an effort to expand
APO's service to youth. The weekend listed is also the National Youth
Service Day.
Chapters are asked to do conduct one service project during the month of
April as their campus schedule allows, but preferably on the assigned
National Youth Service Day.
APO is also asking Chapters to consider taking a leadership role on
their campuses by coordinating a service project to benefit youth with
five other student organizations (e.g. Gamma Sigma Sigma, Circle K, the
Chemistry Club, other Greek letter organizations, the Cycling Club,
etc.).
In addition to providing service to local youth, there are a few
benefits for a Chapter to participate in the National Spring Service
Day:
-- The opportunity for the Chapter and members to take a leadership role
in developing a campuswide service project to benefit youth.
-- Increased publicity/awareness about your Chapter to other students
which could help with recruiting new members or advisors next semester.
-- Being of service to the campus, community, nation and to youth.
Participation of APO Chapters also helps our National Fraternity by:
-- Being an active partner with Youth Service America in coordinating
and participating in the National Youth Service Day.
-- Helping to fulfill our national commitment with America's Promise.
-- Increasing national awareness of our Fraternity with other national
service organizations.
-- Being of service to our nation and to youth.
More information will be available at the National Convention in New
Orleans and early next semester. However, your Chapter may want to start
thinking of some project ideas before the end of this semester so you
can hit the ground running in January.
Good luck with your upcoming exams and have a great holiday season. I
