Brothers:
Over the past few weeks, many Chapters have taken the time to promote
their National Service Week efforts to their campus and local media
which generated a number of stories.
Also helping in this effort has been the mailing of press releases from
the National Office to campus newspapers announcing National Service
Week as well as a number of sectional and regional staffers creating
awareness through obtaining local and state proclamations.
If your chapter, section or region has obtained any publicity for NSW,
please forward copies of the stories or proclamations with your
Chapter's NSW reports which are due Dec. 1.
In addition, several of our partners have included short announcements
and stories in their publications about APO's annual NSW.
One recent effort was the addition of Brother Jason Willis who is
currently being featured as a 'Young Leader' profile on the America's
Promise Web site
(http://americaspromise.org/youngleaders/inspired/meet.cfm).
Jason an active member at Zeta Mu Chapter, at Catholic University in
Region III, and is the student chair of NSW. He is co-chairing NSW with
Amy Masters of Region V.
His profile will be online through Thursday, Nov. 21.
The Fraternity has been working on developing a number of formal and
informal national partnerships over the past few years. In addition to
creating more awareness about APO, these partnerships have led to new
service opportunities at all levels of the Fraternity.
Some Chapters have also created local partnerships with some
organizations to round out their service programs. These efforts have
helped many of those Chapters to increase their membership as well as
raise local awareness about our Fraternity.
Our efforts in the partnership arena will be featured in an upcoming
edition of Torch and Trefoil.
I would like to remind all Chapters that there is still time to submit
an application for an APO Youth Service Grant for 2003.
Successful applicants will receive between $100 and $500 for a service
project to benefit at-risk youth.
Information and applications were mailied to all Chapters earlier this
fall. If you cannot find your copy, you can download the application
information from our Web site at www.apo.org.
The deadline is Dec. 15 to submit your YSG application to the National
Office.
If your Chapter received a Youth Service Grant for 2002 or for a
previous year, your final report should have been received at the
National Office by Friday, Nov. 15.
Chapters that do not submit their YSG reports will not be considered in
good standing (unless they were granted an extension). If your Chapter
has not submitted its YSG report, please do so as soon as possible.
Contact Susan Harris (admin@apo.org) to make sure your reports have
been received.
Finally, as another semester is drawing to an end, I would invite all
Chapters to submit Brothers for a President's Student Service Award.
This award is from the President of the United States and recognizes
full-time college students who have performed at least 100 hours of
service over a 12-month period of time.
Chapters can submit the applications via the President's Student Service
Award link on the the Fraternity's Web site.
There is a nominal fee for the certificate and pin and Chapters are
asked to list Alpha Phi Omega as the organization so we can track our
numbers. This is a great way to recognize those very active brothers
who give so much of their time and energy being of service to others.
I look forward to reading all of your NSW and YSG reports over the
coming weeks as well as meeting many of you at the National Convention
in New Orleans next month.
