Facts as I know them:
My chapter has two hotel rooms reserved, got two rooms
with king-size beds, because we reserved in September
after we knew approx. how many people were going
(which continues to change almost daily it seems). We
got the rooms reserved at the convention rate, check
out being Dec. 31. I extended that by one day so that
we could stay for New Year's. The room rate for both
rooms has jumped about $170-ish, for that one night,
to $239-249 (I'll find out when I get down there). On
my confirmation email, it states that the rooms
*start* at &169, but nowhere does it say that all the
rooms in the convention block are the same kind of
rooms (like, all of them normally run $169). While
reserving the rooms for New Year's, I had the bright
idea that maybe my military ID could help me, and I
enquired on the military rate for New Year's Eve (hey,
I qualify, so why not, right?). I was informed that
they were not letting rooms go for the military rate
that night, and in any case I would need orders. I
don't know if that's a New Orleans thing or not. The
gal I spoke with said it was a Sheraton thing, but I
can tell you that in my nearly 13 years of service in
the Army, the only time I've had to produce orders at
a hotel was when I was going to be staying for an
extended period of time, like last year when I got
activated for Airport Duty and had to stay in a motel
for a couple of months. But for an overnight stay, my
"green card" was always good, until now.
So what's the point you may ask. Well, I'm hoping
that National Office has had some luck in finding
other hotels for New Year's Eve, but I'm not holding
my breath. I'm not happy about the price jump, and
I'm hoping that the people going down with me can
afford it, as I will be unable to cover the increase
completely on my own, and we're staying, as our bus
back doesn't leave until Jan. 1. I didn't realize
that the Sugar Bowl was around the same time either,
so of course they're bumping up the rates.
I don't think there's any kind of solution here, but
needed to get that off my chest. It'll all work out
eventually. I'm a big believer in God's Will/Fate/
Destiny/Karma/{insert applicable word/phrase here}.

of the convention because more Brothers come down just
for the end of the convention, specifically the awards
banquet. The was a second, smaller block of rooms
available at the slightly higher rate of $95. There
was a significantly smaller number than 500 of rooms
available at the $75 rate for the three days before
and after the convention which includes New Year's
Eve. I understand that the $169 rate is their regular
room rate which is being offered to the those who had
one of the convention rate rooms on New Year's Eve
instead of their regular rate for that night which is
$300 plus. Finally I also understand that once
convention registration is complete, the list of those
registered for convention will be checked against
those with hotel rooms. If you are not registered for
convention, you will be charged the regular room rate
instead of the convention rate when you check out.
Keep in mind that though there always seem to be kinks
with the hotel going into a convention, in the end
everything works out.
If hotel issues are really critical to you, discuss it
with the voting delegates from your chapter so they
can consider those issues when the next convention
site is on the floor. If it really matters to you,
it's not to late to lobby your RD to recommend you to
be appointed to the Time and Place committee, the
committee which reviews the bids for the next
convention site.
I am not connected with the convention committee in
any way. I'm just sharing what I know as there seem to
be many questions on the issue.
