Another issue that I haven't seen addressed is durability. Microsoft
changes the way Word documents are formatted all the time. Ever tried
to open a Word document from 10 years ago? Or, worse yet, a document
made in a 10-year-old version of something like WordPerfect or
AppleWorks?
Plain text is an open standard, and it will be readable when someone
wants to go back through the mailing list archives at some point in the
future.
