We are pleased to report that Alpha Phi Omega was represented as
an exhibitor at the 2002 Girl Scout National Convention and meeting
of the Association of Girl Scout Executive Staff over the past several
days.
The Fraternity was represented by several individuals, including
Natalie Browne, Jennifer Slater, Lee Kline, Kat Zibell (National Liaison to
the Girl Scouts of the USA) and David O'Leary (Chair of the National
Scouting and Youth Service Committee).
At these meetings, we spoke with thousands of Girl Scouts, their
leaders, and local council professional staff about membership in
Alpha Phi Omega and about how our chapters can work with local
Girl Scout councils. Overall, we are pleased both with the number
of people who were aware of Alpha Phi Omega either through knowing
a member or because of the support provided by a chapter, and also
by the interest and enthusiasm of so many people in working with
us. We handed out lots of information about the fraternity, so don't
be surprised if someone from a local Girl Scout council contacts
you soon asking for assistance with a project.
Notable updates from the Convention include:
- introduction of new programs for junior high and high school age girls
- creation of a task force for understanding how to involve more
volunteers between the ages of 18-25, based on the request
of the girls
Obviously, the latter action is very relevant to our fraternity and
should provide additional service opportunities with the Girl Scouts
for our members and chapters.
Some information and ideas about working with Girl Scouts are
available on the national web page in the Scouting and Youth
Service program area:

If you have any questions about working with the Girl Scouts,
please don't hesitate to contact us. A survey on chapter
projects with youth, specifically the Girl Scouts, was distributed
with the most recent issue of the Service Flash!. Please take
the time to complete and return this survey, as the information
will help us to further our relationship with the GSUSA.
Thanks!
