Just to share a few thoughts and other info:
1) Circle K in Pennsylvania currently charges approximately $27 per member per
year. This is broken down as $18 International Dues and $9 PA District
Dues. Districts can charge up to (I believe) $10. Clubs charge anywhere from
$0 to $25 club dues although most that do charge club dues only do a nominal
amount like $5.
In additional, most Circle K clubs receive an annual budget from their
schools curtesy of Student Activities Fees which, in most cases, APO
chapters are not allowed to apply for or get. International membership
for Circle K is around 12,500 students.
What most people don't realize, however, is that Circle K is not self
sufficient from membership fees alone. The Circle K International Office
runs with support and financial subsidies from Kiwanis International and
Kiwanis support at the District (Regional) level. I hesitate to put out the
figure that dues would have to be without those additional funding sources
but it would probably be in the $100 range. (I think the last figure I heard
was $87 per member).
2) Gamma Sigma Sigma
Ok, it's been awhile ...annual dues for members is currently
at $50 per year which consists of $40 dues and $10 travel pool
(travel pool is given back as a form of incentives to attend coventions
and conferncess). Pledging fees are $20 per pledge plus $40 annual dues
plus $10 travel pool or $70 for the year of pledging plus any chapter
dues.
GSS Alumni dues are $20 per year plus any local alumni chapter dues.
or simply $20 per year if you're an alumni-at-large. I paid $40 to
be a member of an alumni chapter this year which included all my fees
to everyone.
3) Most honorary and professional societies charge the majority of their
fees upfront rather than charging a per year assessment. Some that I know
about are:
Phi Eta Sigma freshman honor society one time national fee $45
most chapters only charge chapter dues the year of initiation
at Drexel, it was $60 one time fee to join and be a member for 4-5
years.
Golden Key National Honor Society one time national fee approx $75
Phi Sigma Pi joining fee of $135
chapter dues aftewards of $60-$100 per year
For Kiwanis, I pay around $100 per year to belong as well as a bunch of other
costs relating to convention attendance and support of programs. I probably
spent around $1500 per year as a Kiwanis member and that is actually being
conservative.
To me, a one time fee of $100 sounds like a real bargain.
Will this work in pratice though and at the collegiate level?
I think it really comes done to what is happening at the campus level. Most
freshman do not pay to belong to the honoraries and professional societies..not
really. Normal operational procedure is for a nice letter to go to the parents
congratulating them on their son or daughters accomplishments and said parents
then sent back the membership check. I would think it would be hard to market
and collect $100 from students to join if no other campus groups charge that
kind of money to join....However, if every other group was charging that or
more, APO would seem like a bargain.
I'm not sure that APO is at the point where asking for and collecting $100
up front will work. I think for alumni, this is more of a realistic expectation
that pledges that haven't yet been exposed to the organization.
