just thought i'd say two things....first, at the time that i pledged (spring 97), activation fees for NIBs (newly initiated brothers) at my chapter were around $120. These included the necessary national fees, costs generated by the chapter during pledging, and a chapter jacket, which each brother gets (or rather, is supposed to get). Semester dues were $65, each semester. (i don't know the amount that is currently charged).

none of us were rich by any standard, we were poor and many had to set up payment plans. but when push came to shove, brothers did find a way to pay.

nobody that i was aware of was pushed away by the amount of our dues, which are rather high in APO standards. Note, however, that we were still the cheapest fraternity on campus.

second, while this increase is significant at the very begining of a brohter's life, dues in many chapters will decrease because of the amount that need no longer be paid to the national fraterntiy.

i was/am involved in a number of organizations that had one time only national dues of $75 or $100. (many of these were honor or professional organizations). the members saw this one time only fee as a benefit, not a detriment. they would pay once to nationals, and then pay very little, if any dues for the rest of their time at college. While there are downsides to the new proposal, i don't believe that there will be a significant decrease in membership because of the change.

just my thoughts
