Actually, as a state worker, i get tax exemption at hotels, and I did call
them up in New orleans, and said we're a non-profit tax exempt. They didn't
say we couldn't, but I'd need the slips/tax exemption number to do it.

Rich,
Speaking from personal experience only, the taxes that Alpha Phi Omega can
be
exempted from are, in general, sales and income taxes only. Also, although
we are classified as a 501(c)(3) entity by the federal government (IRS), any
sales tax exemptions occur at the state level. Each state makes it own laws
about sales tax exemptions, even though those decisions are frequently
referenced against federal 501(c)(3) designations.
Last spring I called the hotel and asked if we could get an exemption. I
was
told we could not, as those are the tax laws in Louisiana. Specifically,
the
taxes are not "sales" taxes, but rather hotel/motel-type taxes. For what it
is worth, I was told it essentially comes down to Louisiana being a state
whose income is highly dependent on tourism. So, they "milk the cow" for
all
it is worth, including not allowing exemptions for non-profit organizations.
As for taxes on air transportation and gas, it is my understanding that we
cannot get exemptions for these either. Again, it goes back to that the
taxes associated with those are neither sales taxes nor income taxes.
I hope I've helped out a little.
Fraternally,
Cole Robertson
Section 40 Chair
