There's currently a group of brothers in Region III that are seeking to
add the Oath of Loyalty & Service to the Pledge Manual. Currently, we
have the Scout Oath & Law in the Pledge Manual, yet our very own Oath of
Loyalty & Service is not presented to the pledges until they are
initiated. We feel that this Oath is very important and should be
presented to the pledges in advance of their initiation ceremony.
At this time, we would like to invite as many Brothers that agree with
this legislation to co-sponsor it. You don't have to be a voting
delegate to co-sponsor legislation, so anyone that agrees with this and
wants to see this happen, is welcomed and invited to co-sponsor it.
Please send an email to myself (derek.cashman@vcu.edu) by no later than
SEPTEMBER 29, 2002 (so that we can submit the resolution before the
deadline. I need the following information: your name, your position,
your chapter affiliation.
Thanks! Look forward to hearing from you!
The text of the resolution is below:
DOCUMENT TITLE: To add the Oath of Loyalty and Service to the Pledge
Manual.
WHEREAS,
The Oath of Loyalty and Service is required to be taken by all Neophytes
prior to admission to membership in Alpha Phi Omega; and
WHEREAS,
The Scout Oath and Law is currently printed in the Pledge Manual (pg.
4); and
WHEREAS,
We feel that in addition to educating our Pledges on the Scout Oath
prior to initiation, that they should also learn the Oath of Loyalty and
Service prior to initiation; and
WHEREAS,
The National Pledging Standards, #16, clearly state, "An appropriate
period of pledging includes the presentation and explanation of the Oath
of Loyalty and Service to the Pledges by the officers supervising the
Pledge class."
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,
That the Oath of Loyalty and Service shall be added to the Pledge
Manual, and taught as part of our Pledge Education Program.
PURPOSE:
To add the Oath of Loyalty and Service to the Pledge Manual, so that
Pledges learn this information prior to their initiation.
RATIONALE:
Currently, we educate our Pledges on the Scout Oath and Law as part of
their Pledge Education Process, yet we don't ask them to learn our own
Oath of Loyalty and Service until they take it during their initiation
ceremony. We feel if the Scout Oath and Law is important enough to
include in the Pledge Education Process, so too should our own Oath of
Loyalty and Service. Our Pledge Manual assures our Pledges that only
the ritual is secret. In this same statement, the Pledges are told that
they will affirm their loyalty and faith to our Fraternity, yet they do
not actually see the contents of the Oath prior to the ritual. So we
feel that a good presentation and explanation of the Oath of Loyalty and
Service is necessary so that the Pledges fully understand the
commitments that they will make to Alpha Phi Omega when they are
initiated.
