Dear Brothers,
Recently, I attended a meeting of our APO counterpart organization
APO-Philippines. It was the Alumni Council of North America convention held
in San Diego. There was an appeal from a Brother for help of his 8 year old
son who suffers from a severe form of Aplastic Anemia. This is a fatal
condition and is being treated with Chemotherapy and at one point was NEEDING
Bone Marrow transplant. Having a child of my own, I can empathize for this
father. Currently, the situation is a little bit more optimistic as Kevin is
responding to the Chemotherapy. Medicine is unpredictable and patients
health can also be unpredictable. I am encouraging everyone to consider the
awareness of Bone Marrow Donation. There are many information sites on the
web and one ought to have correct information in order to make a decision.
Again, presently, this little boy is NOT needing the Bone Marrow, but if the
call comes for help comes out, please consider helping. The process is less
complicated and there is a process for the Bone Marrow Bank. The following
posting was prior to the updated medical information report. You can
appreciate how important time is for a young life. Thank you for your
attention and prayers for the family.

Kevin Pangilinan needs HELP!
Kevin Pangilinan, an 8-year old boy from Stevenson Ranch, CA, once a bubbly
little bunch of joy to his family, neighbors, and friends, is now bedridden
and confined in a hospital pediatric ICU. Kevin and his unsuspecting parents
were lined up for school registration at the Stevenson Ranch Elementary
School when the first sign of the disease happened, a 30-minute nosebleed,
which necessitated taking him to the hospital.
Kevin was diagnosed to have a severe case of Aplastic Anemia, a very rare
disease affecting fewer than a thousand people each year in the United
States. Aplastic Anemia is not a single disease, but a group of closely
related disorders characterized by the failure of the bone marrow to produce
all three types of blood cells: red blood cells, white blood cells, and
platelets. The exact cause of the disease is unknown, although it has been
linked to exposure to chemicals and radiation. It is also believed that some
cases are inherited and some cases are due to a viral infection.
Kevin is now undergoing chemotherapy while awaiting for a bone marrow
transplant operation. Search is under way for a matching bone marrow donor.
Kevin's parents Abe and Florence Pangilinan, older brother Kenneth, and
friends who care for him are campaigning for your help in finding the stem
cell match. Kenneth's test result was only a 25 percent match -- a little
unfortunate.
It must be emphasized that time is of the essence here. Kevin's condition is
continuously deteriorating every minute; the sooner the bone marrow
transplant can be made, the better is his chance for recovery.
If one can imagine the agony and the pain felt by the closest of kin, maybe
it could help in making YOU decide to commit to render help. Kenneth, the
older brother puts it, and I quote, "I don't want to live without my brother
... I wish it happened to me, instead!"
