[APO-L] Spam on APO-L (Last Comments for Now)

Dear Brothers -
As you may have noticed, APO-L was recently the "lucky" target of a few pieces of spam, prompting a brief discussion on the merits of our list being open to posting by non-subscribers and possible remedies.
Without rehashing the discussion (which you can re-read in the APO-L archive at http://listserv.iupui.edu/archives/apo-l.html), I did want to share something with you. I recently had an exchange of e-mails (on another topic) with the Listserv admin at IUPUI, where we have been graciously hosted at no cost to APO for many years. In the course of our exchange, he let me know that they had received several complaints about spam from some of our list members.
Brothers, I would like to request that any communication from our list to the IUPUI admin folks go through either Ellen Kranzer (who is still our Technical Admin) or myself. As has been explained, there are reasons that our list is open to posting from non-subscribers, and if that needs to change, we will certainly consider making it so. However, it does little good to complain to the fine folks who host our list. Not that they were upset, nor did they indicate that the complaints were anything but civil, but they really have very little to do with our settings and they are definitely not responsible for any spam we might receive. In fact, they have just updated their Listserv software to version 1.8e, which is supposed to improve some spam filtering capabilities.
I would like to thank everyone who has thoughtfully commented on our relatively minor spam problems, and want to encourage anyone with suggestions for the good of the list to continue to share them with Ellen and/or myself. We do appreciate your input and concerns, and it's that sort of caring that has made APO-L a thriving success for 15 years. (My memory is beginning to fade a bit, but I recall that our e-mail discussions started shortly after the 1986 National Convention in Houston.)
