I have to definitely agree with John. Cold calling, such is the life of a
guy selling anything - and I've done it. Cold calling is a numbers game -
you find 100 people with possible intrest, 10 will listen and maybe 1 will
do something. It's useful if you are trying to canvas a large population,
but do you really think an organization such as ours should be script
calling?

Here's how Ep Sig started. My great grandbig had a blast at an APO SUNY
Frdonia social. He thought it was a good idea. He stuck it out over 1 and a
half years. The chapter is still around today, some 15 years later. Why? No
one called him and said "Wanna APO?"

In fact, I think a fraternal organization that cold calls for members is
exactly the wrong way to go about this. As those in sales will tell you, the
rates break down roughly so:

Cold calling = 1% strike rate, Direct Mail = 3%, targeted buying guide (call
this a student Clubs Directory) = 15%, and targeted email about 25%.
Finally, a referral of a qualified person can net 50% strike rate - which is
to say that if the person has a good idea of APO, has a positive view of the
fraternity, and is willing to work at it, then we have found the right
person to lead a new chapter.

Does anyone sincerely here believe that in a volunteer organization that we
will have people play "Dial-A-Potential-Brother"? I can never see that
happening, nor do I think it's effective. In fact, I think it will turn away
more than it brings in.

If you want to plant the APO seed, do it in high school, and do it with a
warm handshake, not a cold call.
