A couple more extension comments...
1) Make sure that each chapter knows schools that the staff would be
willing to expand to. It probably isn't good to give them a laundry list,
but rather work with the chapter and given them 5 that are geographically
close and 5 that are culturally close. For example for MIT, that first
list would include Boston College, the second CalTech. Then let them
brainstorm for ideas on how to get there. Culturally close often includes
the schools that your school plays in sports, how is your basketball
conference when it comes to APO? (As far as I know there is only *one*
division one basketball conference that is completely covered with APO,
and that is the ACC.
2) My method, sort of. Cold "Calling" can be done *if* the student has an
interest that can be easily tied to Alpha Phi Omega. And many people place
their interests on web pages. Lets say that my section chair (84) DC&MD
decided that we were going to try to expand to the US Naval Academy(yeah
right). Then undergraduate volunteer or two at say Maryland - College park
could search for all web pages with alpha phi omega, scout, scouting,
volunteer*, community service, or other selected words at www.usna.edu and
then when they find them and the word is used in an APO relevant way (say
eagle scout rather than navy scout ship), something close to a form letter
could be sent out to each and every one of them (perhaps one letter to
students, a different one to staff).
Now this *would* need to be arranged on a regional/sectional level to keep
the three eagle scouts at Lafayette from getting letters from two dozen
different brothers. Also it doesn't work as well on schools that don't
give students web page space (like Howard U.) and the schools should be
specifically assigned by region/section staff so that *no* one tries
Harvard, USNA, Notre Dame or Dartmouth without specific orders of the
Regional Directors...
I may be taking things away from the National M&E committee with this
idea, if so, I apologize.
