APO Volunteers are needed to help with a huge Girl Scout event on the Mall
in Washington, DC next Saturday, June 8th. There were 90,000 people
at the event in 1997, so lots of volunteers are needed to help the GSUSA
celebrate their 90th anniversary.
Still Singing After All These Years will be held on the grounds of the
Washington Monument. Picnicking begins at noon, singing at1:30.
Guest performers include Michelle Shocked and Odetta, along with
DC's own Harolyn Blackwell of the Washington Opera and Sunny Sumpter,
a prominent local jazz singer. The event lasts until about 4 p.m. with
clean-up afterward, and some kind of APO social activities, to be
decided by those participating, see below for more info.
For purposes of planning for a head count, visitors are encouraged to
register; however, the Mall is a public space, so anyone who shows up
will be welcome.

The type of help that is needed includes:
1/ If anyone has time this upcoming week and you are in the DC area,
the local Girl Scout council also needs a lot of help in their office,
with telephones, preparing volunteer packets, and lots of other
stuff.

2/ Greeting people at the suburban metro stations where there is a lot
of parking, and assisting them with using the metro ticket machines,
directions, etc. Help is needed starting at 9 a.m. until about noon.

Branch Avenue station in Maryland - Green line

There are maps with the sites that have parking, etc.
3/ Help with a variety of activities while the singing is happening.
These include staffing the information tent, re-filling water stations,
distributing programs, and many other things. After wrapping up
at the metro parking sites, go to the main Information Tent near
the Washington Monument.
4/ After spending the day helping with the event, please assist with
cleaning up. The Girl Scouts will do a good job picking up trash
but additional coordination and assistance will certainly be needed.
After the Event:
Between 4:30 and 5:30, as cleanup is wrapping up, everyone should
gather on the river side of the Lincoln Memorial, facing toward where the
bridge goes over the Potomac River. Most of the people will be heading
back into downtown toward the Metro stations so this should be a good
meeting spot.
Volunteers should register beforehand with the people listed
above. When you meet your volunteer coordinator, they will provide
an orange volunteer shirt. Since they might run out of these shirts,
please wear APO letters or other APO paraphenalia so you can be
identified by the Girl Scouts and by other APO members.
One thing to definitely remember whether you are going to this
event or not -
Don't drive into downtown DC on Saturday, June 8th!
Parking will be even more difficult than usual, hence the emphasis
on using Metro.

If you arrive on Saturday and can't find the group you are scheduled to
work with, go to one of the downtown Metro stops near the Mall and
ask one of the volunteers (with an orange shirt) for Adrienne.
Are you are interested in attending and can get to DC but need
a place to stay, also please get in touch. There are brothers in
the area who can probably host you.
