I've been reading the emails regarding Scouting info taught during pledging
and thought that I would add a little to the conversation. I was
pledgemaster this past semester to a pledge class made up of 9 females and 3
males. I was never a scout of any kind but was an Indian Princess. When we
teach our pledges about our scouting history, I don't feel that we are
forcing them to learn about a particular organization. I feel that we are
trying to instill the beliefs behind all youth organizations and the Boy
Scouts and Girl Scouts are the ones that we are the most closely related to.
As far as what we taught:
The founders of both Scouting Groups
Dates of Founding
Scout Oath and Law.
No one has seemed to find this information irrelevant whether they were a
scout or not. However, I don't think that we should test them on more than
the basics. We put our pledges through so much testing already, and if the
chapter isn't strongly affiliated with Scouts, I don't see how knowing about
Order of the Arrow, etc would help. This is something that most of us in
Iota Lambda have learned about through brothers becoming Eagle Scouts, etc.
I am glad to see this discussion coming to light however, as we are always
having issues with how closely we are affiliated with the Scouts, especially
with the diversity of brothers that we have.
