Brothers:
I realize that I wasn't clear with my last message. While I do think it
would be nice for chapters to have a regularly-updated file on Scouting and
Youth Service programs, and that the file should contain descriptive
information of the programs along with contact information of Scouting and
youth service program leaders, that does not mean that Scouting education
should be a required part of every chapter's pledge (or continuing member
education) program.
Educating pledges and actives on Scouting is a chapter-by-chapter decision.
It is true that we are not officially connected with Scouting or the BSA,
and while we do encourage involvement in youth service programs (including
Scouting) as part of a Chapter's overall service program, we do not require
it.
I do think that chapters, through the avenue of their Scouting and Youth
Service advisors, should have readily-available information on national and
local scouting and youth service programs. My vision of what that
"information" should be is probably more thorough (or volumous, depending on
your interpretation) than others. I place emphasis on the S&YS Advisor's
role because it is likely that this individual either has established
contacts with these organizations, or may be able to wade through the local
maze of contacting them better than a transplanted student-brother with
little familiarity in the local area. If a chapter has an active serving as
a S&YS Chair or Liason, then the active should, of course, coordinate this
effort (hopefully, with the Advisor's help).
