I doubt if ten percent (10%) of our Chapters have this information available
(either through their members or on file). These are definitely
deficiencies that need to be addressed for every chapter. There is no
excuse for a Chapter not to be informed on the Scouting program (BSA,
Venture, GSUSA, LFL, etc.) or any additional youth service programs
(Campfire, Boys and Girls Club, etc.). This is especially troubling
regarding Scouting, as we recently initiated a program where Chapters honor
recipients of Eagle and Gold Awards.
This is definitely a job for the Scouting and Youth Service Advisor of each
Chapter, as well as Regional Scouting and Youth Service Chairs. Every
Chapter should at least have a file onhand (updated annually) providing
national as well as local information on Scouting and Youth Service
Programs. Obviously, some of it should be designed as instructional
material (for pledges and uninformed actives). It should also serve as a
directory of contacts for setting up projects and conducting other business.
I probably went a little overboard here, so I'll digress.
