Dear Brothers:
As the school year begins to end, there are number of things you can do
to be of service to our beloved Fraternity over the summer months to
prepare for next fall and beyond.
Among them are:
1. If your chapter did a Spring Service Day project or serve as a campus
coordinator for National Youth Service Day, please send your reports to
the National Office as soon as possible. Forms can be downloaded from
the Spring Service Day handbook at www.apo.org and mailed or faxed to
the National Office or you can fill out the reporting information online
through the national Web site, www.apo.org.
2. If your chapter participated in a service project that benefitted
youth during a Sectional Conference in April, that would also count as
your chapter participating in the Spring Service Day. Again, you can
report that participation and hours online through the national Web
site, www. apo.org.
3. It is very important that we do our best to track our service hours
so that we can use the information to better plan our programs for the
coming year as well as to promote our Fraternity to various audiences
and other national service organizations. Please send your Regional
Service Chair or Regional Director the number of hours your chapter
performed during the spring 2002 semester and also for the fall 2001
semester. I have already requested that the Regional Service Chairs
contact the chapters in their respective regions for this information.
But just in case they have not contacted your chapter, you can be of
assistance and forward that information to your Regional Director who
will get that information to your Regional Service Chair so our records
can be updated.
4. Your chapter can begin planning its 2002 National Service Week
project for the first week of November. A NSW project pre-planning
guide, called "Sky's the Limit," has already been sent to your chapter
and this can also be downloaded from the national Web site, www.apo.org.
Remember, prior planning promotes phenomenal performance. Your chapter
can take advantage of the summer months to plan its best-ever NSW
project.
5. If your chapter officers have not done so already, register NOW for
one of the Chapter Program Workshops around the nation. The cost is $55
for the weekend which includes materials, housing, four meals and a lot
of great information sharing, networking and fellowship with a lot of
other brothers from across the nation. CPWs are open to chapter
officers and any and all brothers who would like to become a chapter
officer in the future. CPWs are slated for various dates throughout the
summer months in Toledo, Ohio, Fairfax, Va., Atlanta, Ga., College
Station, Tx., Kansas City, Mo., and in Los Angeles, Ca. This is a great
opportunity to develop your leadership skills. Visit the national Web

6. The summer months are also a great time to begin planning and doing
some fund-raising for your chapter to attend the National Convention in
New Orleans on Dec. 27-30. This is also a great time and I would
encourage every brother to attend and participate in the convention. I
can assure you that you will have a great time as more than 2,000
brothers will be in attendance. Convention information is on the

7. If you are an advisor, alumni or sectional/regional/national staffer,
you are more than welcome to attend the annual Sectional Resource
Weekend in August. This is a great time to get some training, share
ideas with other staffers and get to know more about the important role
you serve in our Fraternity. More information can be found on the
national Web site, www.apo.org.
8. Before you leave campus for the summer, please check with your
chapter membership vice president and treasurer to make sure all of
paperwork and fees for your spring (and possibly fall) pledge classes
have been sent into the National Office. Sometimes this slips through
the cracks and pledges don't get reported as becoming active members.
Remember, no one is officially recognized as an active brother unless
their paperwork and fees have been received by the National Office. This
is also very important as we head into convention in December. Please
check to make sure the fees and paperwork are received by the National
Office. A quick email to Judy Mitchell at the National Office,
(chapter.services.dir@apo.org) can verify if this has been received or
not.
9. While you are checking with the National Office, you might want to
make sure your chapter has no outstanding bills with the National Office
for pins, DSKs or other merchandise from the past school year. To make
sure your chapter is clear of any bills owed to the National Office,
contact our accountant, Linda Secrist at accountant@apo.org. She will be
more than happy to check and assist your chapter.
10. Finally, the last thing you can do before you leave campus is to
make sure your section chair and regional director have a contact phone
number and email address for your chapter president and advisory chair
for the 2002 fall semester as well as how to contact these brothers
during the summer. This can be a big help to get a fast start this fall.
11. If you are graduating this semester, please accept our sincerest
congratulations on your accomplishment and we wish you well in your
future endeavours. We hope you will continue your involvement with the
Fraternity by becoming a Life Member (if you have not done so already);
participating in a Fraternity event at the chapter, sectional or
regional levels; attending the National Convention; participating in our
annual Torchbearer campaign; or volunteer to be a
sectional/regional/national staff member or a chapter advisor. If you
are interested in any of the above, contact our National Office or any
Fraternity leader for more information. There is always something that
needs to be done to advance the Fraternity's goals and objectives at all
levels.
12. If you know of a brother who is 25 years of age or younger and who
has completed more than 100 hours of service during the past 12 months,
you can nominate this person to receive a President's Student Service
Award. Information has already been sent to your chapter from the
National Office. Simply go to the link at the bottom of our home page
on our national Web site, www.apo.org, download the application, make
sure you write Alpha Phi Omega as the organization, fill out the rest of
the form, send in the nominal fee and the form to the address listed.
They will send you a special certificate and pin to recognize the
brother with. It's as simple as that and it is a very special way to
recognize our special brothers.
Keeping in touch is a two-way street and we need everyone's help to keep
the lines of communication open. Also, it is VERY important to keep our
membership and service records updated. Regular reporting IS a service
to the Fraternity that can easily be done.
Your sectional, regional and national leadership looks forward to
