This was in the context of a claim made that there were "many" chapters
unable to recharter because their host institution wanted them to be
single-gender. In order for that claim to be true, then the hypothetical
situation Randy suggested would have to be a real situation.
I am not convinced, by the way, that such a restriction would be
categorically dismissed. The host institutions, as Randy pointed out, have
a lot of say in crafting the charter of any potential chapter. The
Fraternity is somewhat aggressive in extension efforts, and may be very
willing to accept such a covenant if it means getting a chapter on a
campus. Certainly single-gender chapters can be chartered at single-gender
institutions.
I think a more interesting hypothetical would be the other way around --
what if the administration of a single-gendered institution insisted that
an APO chapter be coed -- and suggested a way to make that possible,
through the involvement of people not enrolled in that institution (but
perhaps enrolled at a different institution with affiliations to the host
institution)?
