The Girl Scouts of the United States of America celebrate their 90th
anniversary this year (March 12th was the actual anniversary date, but
celebrations are continuing throughout this month and the spring).
If your chapter has been seeking a reason to make contact with
your local Girl Scout council, this is a good chance to do so.
Here are two sample letters your chapter can use the letter to congratulate
the Girl Scouts on their anniversary, to introduce your Alpha Phi Omega
chapter, and volunteer to help them.
If you haven't been in touch with the Girl Scouts before, here is a sample
letter to use:

Some hints for using these letters:
- make sure to edit in your own chapter, school and contact information,
along with information about projects that you are already doing with
the Girl Scouts or other youth organizations. You might include information
about the size of your chapter and whether you have members with
background in the Girl Scouts.
- you can find contact information for the Girl Scout council closest
to you by checking the info on their web page at:
http://jfg.girlscouts.org/jfgfunctions/cnclfind/cnclmap.htm
or by looking in the phone book.
- to get the name of the Executive Director of your local council,
see if they have a web page (using the info provided from their national
web page) or call them and ask for the person's name. Be prepared to
explain why - that you would like to send a note of congratulations on their
anniversary.
- Feel free to edit the content of the letter, but be careful about
getting too creative, especially if you are sending this to a person you
have never otherwise made contact. Remember that the name of the
organization is "Girl Scouts of the United States of America", *not* the
"Girl Scouts of America".
- You should also be prepared with some info and ideas about
how to work together on a project, if the Executive Director
does call you or send you email. Some suggestions are at the end
of this note. You can also get ideas for projects by looking at
the Girl Scout web pages listed below.
- If you don't hear back from the Executive Director in about
two weeks, feel free to give the person a follow-up call
to introduce yourself. Prior to making this call, you
should be prepared with some information about the
Girl Scouts and their programs, and some ideas about
how your chapter might work with them.

Here is a list of projects that chapters have successfully conducted,
working with their local Girl Scout councils:
- conduct a Badge Day on campus, where the girls are instructed
on material to earn one or more awards
- visit a Girl Scout camp and help clear trails, set up tents, paint
buildings, etc.
- conduct a Career Day on campus, where the young women in
the programs for older Girl Scouts can visit campus and
learn about college and preparing for the work world
- host a day in a local city, county, or state park where the girls
and their leaders can learn and practice outdoor skills
There are plenty of other possible projects, and plenty of Girl
Scouts and former Girl Scouts out there in many APO chapters,
so I know you can come up with creative ideas. Please share
with the email list your ideas and whether you have success
in contacting and conducting projects with the Girl Scouts.
