Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to give my two-cents on Rush. We, Gamma Rho, at the
University of North Texas, just completed our Rush last week. We have 26
pledges, which may not seem like a lot to some chapters, but considering
that we have about 14 or so actives it is a great amount.
There are a few things that worked for us that I would like to share.
1) A committed Rush chair (Yeah Merrie!)
- If you don't have a committed Rush chair then nothing else matters.
You have to have someone that WANTS the job, not just someone who took it
because no one else would.
2) Enthusiasm!!
- If the active members aren't enthusiastic around the potential
pledges then why would they want to join? Don't be overbearing, but don't
just sit there. And remember how you felt the first meeting you went to, you
probably were a little nervous so make everyone feel as comfortable as
possible.
3) Freshman Orientation
- If your school has a freshman orientation, which it probably does,
then you probably have some kind of student organization fair. Freshmen
breathe new life into APO and this is the best time to meet them. Have a
couple of members attend who are ENTHUSIASTIC and pass out flyers answer
questions, and get email addresses and phone numbers. Then in the weeks
leading up to school starting email the interested students and maybe even
call them and remind them of the upcoming rush events.
4) Webpage
- This can be very important. Just like many students "shop" for their
college this way, you can also "shop" for your organization. This may be the
first and only impression someone gets of APO.
I hope this helps.
In Brotherhood,
Joshua Michaelis
