Gamma Theta seems to have a pretty effective Rush -- although I would call
it more of a "show."
We typically have only one informational meeting, which we advertise through
sticking quarter sheets in bathroom stalls all over campus (actually quite
effective!!), table tents in the student union, chalking all over campus,
and the ever-so-controversial campus-wide e-mail. It is controversial
because it costs quite a bit of money for us and because you get a TON of
people who are only there for the free pizza. The upside is that you find
pledges out there who really need APO, but need it delivered to their
doorstep.
This semester our Rush meeting consisted of a series of skits linked
together by two kids sitting on the couch watching TV. They would flip to
the news (pledge chairs) to get the important info and then to shows like
Star Trek (where Captain Kirk saves the day by applying something he learned
at Merit Badge Univ.) or X-Files (a band of college zombies that build
entire subdivisions overnight). We even had VH1 where someone wrote a song
and sang infront of a power point slide show. Then we let everyone come
down front and eat free pizza -- all the while, talking and recruiting.
Two days later we have a highway cleanup and then a BBQ (recurrent free food
theme -- works pretty darn well!). That's it! Now we have about 35 great
pledges!
A lot of effort goes into writing scripts and getting the technical side of
things done, but in the end I think it's worth it.
