The R5AA is proud to announce its new award and the first recipients.
Officially, the new award is called the "Rugh-Anderson Distinguished Alumni
Medal." Named in honor of the past three Regional Directors of Region Five:
Bill Rugh, John and Barb Anderson, these beautiful medals honor contributions
made to the Fraternity or wider community by alumni who give unselfishly of
themselves.

The medals are silver steel and depict a hand lifting a torch to symbolize
the role of each individual in uplifting the "Spirit of Service." Each hangs
from a yellow ribbon bearing a double white stripe in the center. The ribbon
color for the regional award was selected to correspond to the ribbon for the
National Alumni Distinguished Service Key; the added stripes represent
Leadership and Friendship -- the remaining two Cardinal Principles of the
Fraternity. The inscription on each medal reads: "Alpha Phi Omega/Region
5/Distinguished Alumni."

At the Fall 1999 Region V Conference in Morgantown, WV, the one-year-old
Region Five Alumni Association formally adopted a written policy for
selecting honorees and, just after the 75th Anniversary Rededication
Ceremony, announced the three special medals for the namesakes and the
innaugural group of ten awardees. Numbered one through ten in alphabetical
order, the first R5AA Rugh-Anderson honorees are:

 1. Jim Hahn
 2. Julie Helphrey
 3. David Keely
 4. Molly Lanz
 5. Rick Martin*
 6. Lee Peters
 7. Ed Richter
 8. Mike Schrader**
 9. John Stacy
10. Jen Timbrook

     * Announced with this post, but not yet presented.
**Presented along with two namesake medals at the Spring 2000 Section
        56/59 Conference in Toledo, OH.

While presented at a suitably solemn opportunity, the medals have been
affectionately dubbed the "DAMn Johnny Rhubarb's" by some members in keeping
with the regional tradition of not taking anything too seriously.

Sincere congratulations on behalf of the entire region go out to these fine
members. Nominations and selection of the next group of alumni -- no more
than 5 per year -- will be during the Philladelphia National Convention in
December.

Questions regarding the awards can be sent to <JimBeKind@AOL.com> Jim Hahn,
Chartering President of the R5AA.
