Here is a little guide that I came up with about a year ago.

12 Steps to Recruiting Advisors
1. Inventory your Chapters needs. What kind of Advisors does your
chapter need? Do you need a Scouting or Faculty/Administrator to
remain in good standing? Does your chapter need someone with a
specific expertise (finance, specific service areas, red-tape
cutting, etc.)? An Advisor Search Committee may be formed to do
this.

2. Compile a list of Potential Advisor Candidates who fulfill your
Chapters needs. When looking for a Faculty/Administrator, you may
consider anyone who is a faculty member, administrator, or staff
member. When looking for a Scouting Advisor, you may consider anyone
who is associated with a youth oriented organization (Boy Scouts,
Girl Scouts, 4H, etc.).

3. Have a small team (2 to 3 members) to meet with the Potential
Advisor Candidates to extend an invitation to consider becoming an
Advisor of your Chapter. The contact team should comprise a Chapter
Officer, a member familiar with the potential Advisor candidate,
and/or a Chapter Advisor. In this meeting the object is to present
what Alpha Phi Omega is about. Be able to relate to the potential
Advisor candidate what is needed. Provide
a copy of In the Beginning and the Questions & Answers book so
that they may read more on their own time. Also provide a way for the
Potential Advisor Candidate to contact members of the visiting team
(phone numbers, etc.) and a Chapter History.

4. Invite the Potential Advisor Candidates to a series of service
projects, fellowships, and Chapter meetings where they can meet and
learn about the Chapter. Have several events scheduled that allows as
many members as possible to meet the Potential Advisor Candidates.
This also gives the opportunity for the Potential Advisor Candidates
to see what the Chapters program, how it operates, and the chemistry
of the members.

5. Invite the Potential Advisor Candidates to an Advisory Board and
an Executive Committee meeting. This will give the Potential Advisor
Candidates a chance to observe some of the inner-workings of the
Chapter.

6. Select Advisor Candidates. At this point, The Advisor Search
Committee should know which Advisor Candidates are willing to serve
as a Chapter Advisor. They need to present a slate of Advisor
Candidates for approval to become Advisors by the Chapters General
Membership.

7. Have the team that made initial contact meet with the Advisor
Candidates to confirm them on becoming a Chapter Advisor. The team
that made initial contact will present the decision of the Chapter to
the Advisor Candidates. For those that have been selected as an
Advisor, the team will reconfirm their willingness to serve.

8. Educate the Advisor Candidate. The Chapter needs to provide some
more education about the Fraternity for the Advisor Candidate (they
are not an Advisor yet). A Pledge Manual, National Bylaws, and
Chapter Bylaws should be provided at this time.

9. Conduct at least a Brotherhood Ceremony for the new Chapter
Advisors. Chapter Advisors are members of the Chapter and need to be
part of a Brotherhood Ceremony. They should be encouraged to wear
their Service Pin. Also, if your Chapter gives Pledges a set of
letters, this should also be done.

10. Have the new Chapter Advisors complete the Registration for
Chapter Advisors or Honorary Members form and send it to the National
Office. The Chapter sends this form to the National Office, not the
Advisor. The National Office needs to have the new Advisors
information as soon as possible so that they can input the data into
the National Membership
Database and send them a Membership Certificate.

11. Add the new Chapter Advisors to the Chapter Roster. It is
important to make sure that all members know how to contact the new
Advisor.

12. Continue to communicate with the Chapter Advisors. Provide the
Advisor with current event calendars, rosters, newsletters, and Torch
& Trefoils. All Advisors should be present at special functions such
as ceremonies, officer installations, and banquets as well as
regularly present at normal chapter functions. If your Chapters
Pledges must interview the Active
Members, they should also interview the Advisors.
