I really don't want to prolong this discussion because I was only trying
to protect the Fraternity by making a very esoteric, but at the same time
very important, legal point. The issues are partisan political activity
and "lobbying" by Alpha Phi Omega. Thus, activities of individual
members not using the name of Alpha Phi Omega are not at issue, and
neither is the nature of the "cause" being promoted.
The message is very simple: a non-profit, charitable, tax-exempt
organization may not promote partisan political activity or lobby. As to
what constitutes those activities, your school or the National Office
should be consulted. 99% of everything our actives do does not even
raise this issue, so let's keep things in perspective. Thanks, and now I
will shut up!!
